Hi from the UK. A story in the papers here over the last day or two is about the Simpsons coming over to the Uk for an epsiode and the various UK stars that will appear in it, including Tony Blair. Apparently they were also going to give David Beckham a cameo but have now decided against that as he is not famous enough! A spokesman for the show said that "soccer was only considered a girls game in the US". How can you guys hope to make it big on the football world scene when that kind of comment is still being said now.
Because it was a SPOKESMAN FOR THE SIMPSONS! He says words that the big guys don't wanna bother with. His football credibility is zero. What's a mewbie?
nuckin fewbies just move the F to where the N is and vice-versa and you 'mewbie' is actually a newbie. The other word, on bigsoccer, is not fit to print, but you get it.
Simpsons always bashed footballsoccer (What about the Simpsons and soccer chapter?), so Why they will include a footballer? I don´t think they will, they don´t consider any footballer important. The only miracle in USA is Pele and Brazilian football ¿¿?? Do you understand?
Well, Maybe the Simpson's are doing a funny take on that one guy from "The Who" that's a pedophile, trying to get into Bart's pants. Just isn't enough time to get Beckham into the episode.
The Simpsons is one of the all time greatest shows they make fun of everything and anything. Have you ever seen the show??? I wish people would get over the whole soccer bashing thing, people dont have to like it. I am not a fan of basketball but I dont bash it, so just ignore the comments and you will be fine. Dont lower yourself to that standard.
Not to mention hockey, the WNBA, stock car racing, softball, overwrought renditions of The National Anthem, Republicans, Democrats, comic book readers, Japanese game shows, PBS fundraising, nuclear power, kids' TV, Latino TV, organized religion, unorganized new-agey quasi-religion, elementary education, higher education, lack of education, France, Brazil, Australia, the rural US, Urban US, New York -- specifically Manhatten, public transportation, and people in general...
One of my all time favorite;s on the Simpsons is when during the match of Mexico vs Portugal the Kent Brockman the English announcer was is a boring voice saying half back to center back to the halfbalk he holds holds it... an while the foreign announce was saying the same things but all excited
whether the simpsons like soccer or not is moot. they make fun of everything and the soccer match that the previous poster referred to was hilarous. but beckham probably isn't famous enough over here. a majority of the people know his wife but not him. of course if the simpsons were still funny and not over the proverbial hill, then their opinion might rile me up. but it doesn't. yawn.
Two points: First, I think they're right. Most people here have no clue who Beckham is. Two things that may change that: The movie "Bend it Like Beckham", which is getting a lot of positive press over here, and the Machester United Tour this summer, assuming Beckham still plays for ManU at that time. Second, one of the best lines of the Simpsons--Homer gives up Beer for 30 days, and goes to a baseball game. Everyone around him is slamming beers, while he doesn't. After a few moments he says, "I never knew how boring baseball actually was!" So nothing is sacred on the Simpsons...
I kind of disagree. I think Beckham is JUST ON THE VERGE of household name status in the US, and a funny one-liner on the Simpsons would probably push him over the edge. "Bend it Like Beckham" is helping, but he benefited a lot from the last world cup, too. Maybe next season, after the ManU tour, which seems to be selling like hotcakes.
I think its stupid thing to do since A) The Simpsons are pretty big outside the US and maybe they should have considered the International audience B) the Simpsons have had a lot of guest stars who are less famous than Beckham like Jasper John or the British lady who wrote books and they pulled off the Benny Hill parody a couple of weeks ago
Of course he didn't make it any further than ehhh Cobi Jones in the last world cup. Now somebody please kill this thread.
Dear god! Somebody save the children! The worlds most overhyped player isnt getting enough press in the US!!!!!!!!
Soccer's in good company... ...with Denver, Colorado. When Homer watches a gridiron football game, Denver always seems to be playing and always loses. And lets not forget the recent Simpsons where the Frankenstien basketball player is really bad because he was made up of parts from Nuggets players.
Jeez, I just about fell out of my chair when I read that one! Exactly who gives a crap whether Beckham specifically is big in the US or not? Frankie Hejduk has gotten just as far in the world cup. I'd rather have surfer dude (or more realistically, Mathis, Freddy, Baby Jesus, Reyna, Keller/Friedel) on the simpsons than the Brylcreem Boy. Of course, Gazza, on the other hand, is custom-made for the Simpsons
You forgot anyone that consumes alcohol or donuts, the police, the Kennedys, fat people, clowns, the mob, and red-headed afro serial killers with huge feet. PS - David Beckham is NOT on the verge of being a household name in the USA. Neither is Ronaldo. But I don't expect many Brits to know who Michael Vick or Ricky Williams is either, so...
Michael Vick and Ricky Williams are not internationally known athletes. David Beckham is. Michael Jordan is. Shaquille O'Neal is. Andre Agassi is. To a lesser extent Barry Bonds and Mario Lemieux are. I know people in and out of the US who have no interest in the NBA and have never seen an NBA game in their lives, yet they know who Jordan and O'Neal are. It's the same in much of the world with David Beckham. America is unique in the way it is such a "popular culture isolation chamber". This is especially true with sports. The fact that so many people with such unprecedented access to a variety of media sources have never heard of an athlete, who is arguably the most famous athlete on Earth, is quite remarkable. It's not just a matter of "he's British so he's famous in Britain, not here - just like Vick is American so he's just famous here."
Eh, I doubt anyone wants to argue this, but Jasper Johns happens to be widely considered as one of the most important painters in the last fifty years.
