Seems a bit light but, I guess it's the principal of the thing. Beckham fined $1,000 by MLS for conduct toward fan during Galaxy-AC Milan exhibition game - LA Times
Beckham fined this just in http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/storie...ME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2009-07-24-16-24-36
Exactly, it's the principal. I'm glad the league established that what he did was not ok. They are implicitly calling him a liar. I can accept that. Although, I think it's interesting that there are no quotes from the league in this. I think that usually there are.
I suppose the monetary value is pointless, but it at least acknowledges that Beckham was in the wrong, which is all we could hope for really.
No doubt the LA supporters groups will be throwing money into a hat to help him out........maybe not, unless the hat says "Beckhams Cab Fare to LAX" on it.
Do other pro leagues scale their fines by player salary? I don't think so. The only way that happens is if a player is suspended without pay. Obviously, that hurts the high priced guys more in the wallet. But for your garden variety fine, you have to have some sort of standard, probably related in some way to average salaries.
Wow, I stand corrected. Quote from Garber: "We support our players interacting with fans, whether it is at clinics, charity events or by high-fiving their supporters in the stands while celebrating a goal," Garber said. "However, our players should never engage in conduct that can be interpreted as encouraging fans to come out of the stands and onto the field, regardless of the reason." Deliberately not taking a position on if Beckham was trying to fight a fan or not. Weaksauce if you ask me.
Fines are deducted from his pay on an installment basis over 2 to 8 paychecks, so I think he'll get by. Maybe go for grande instead of venti once or twice.
I'm giving Garber the nod on this one. He's acknowledging Beckham instigated it, without unnecessarily getting into the 'he said/douche said' crap. Well played.
Ah, however, as the commish has now stated in an official company memo that their highest paid employee invited said supporter to come down, doesn't that kill the trespassing charge?
$1,000 is pretty big my MLS standards, no? most fines are of the $250 or $500 variety aren't they. or am i stuck in 1998.
Agreed 100%. I thought that MLS wouldn't have the balls to punish Beckham like they would any other player who would pull that crap. I'm very happy that Garber proved me wrong. Good stuff.
According to the MLSPA, Old Spice's 2009 guaranteed salary is $6.5 million, making his massive $1000 rough 0.015% of his salary. What's 0.015% of YOUR annual salary?
The league fined him despite posts here claiming they had no balls. Does the commissioner also need to call Beckham an asshole to make you happy?
Most are because the grievance process can kick in for fines $750 and higher only, if I read the CBA correctly.
agreed, did what they needed to do without getting into the details that would just be a source of controversy
It just reeks a little of him being afraid to ruffle the feathers of the golden goose, that's all. I agree with you that what he did is better then doing nothing at all.
Oh, and since some of you agree with Barbie that "Math is hard!", here's a concrete illustration of how massive of a fine 0.015% is. For those who make between $50,000 and $100,000 a year, it's dinner at Chili's. For those who make between $20,000 and $50,000 a year, it's dinner at McDonalds. For those who make less than that, you figure out what you can get for less than $3. In other words, good for the league for actually fining him, but it's hardly a punishment. Suspending him for a game? That's a different story.
Did he call Brian Ching a stupid twat for what he tweeted? Did he say, "What a retard" when Chris Leitch was suspended earlier this season? It astounds me the lengths some people will go to in order to justify the axe they have to grind.
