England has had maybe three very good managers over the last 4 decades, Sir Bobby, Venables, and Sven. I felt Venables was the best of them and I think it was the greatest mistake England have made in the last 4 decades allowing him to leave after Euro '96. A real shame that. The rest never knew how to manage games to get England across the line. If they made more of their chances, I think they might have won Italia '90, Euro '96 and Euro 2004. Maybe the 2002 WC, but I felt there was too much chicanery at those finals. For me, 2002 WC was a sham. Capello's England was very good at first, but then it all imploded because of John Terry's affair and due to his spat with Rio's talentless brother. Terry should not have been the England captain, but he was a proper defender, putting his face in the way of shots and so forth. He bled for England, no question there. Also, England needed Scholes. Capello should have done more to convince him to continue with England. For me, England's best player. Like Italy losing Pirlo or Argentina losing Messi. Rio was a very good defender, very quick, had skill and flashy ability, but his knees gave up on him. In games against Pep's Barcelona, I felt his lack of footballing intelligence was very evident. It's why I could never rate him as highly as van Dijk, for me the best defender of the Premier League era, but Rio would come be my second pick. Matrix was good for a laugh. Lippi against Germany in the 2006 semifinal in Dortmund ( Germany's Unbeaten Home Pitch ) spotted that the Germans were cracking , that her walls were breaking, and instead of playing it safe Lippi in extra time takes off 2 midfielders in Camoranesi and Perrotta and brings on two more forwards in Iaquinta and Del Piero . Finishing the match with 4 forwards on the pitch ( Gilardino, Totti, Iaquinta and Del Piero ). What happened after he brought them on was pure magic and the rest was history. Thats going for it. That is a winning mentality.
Lippi was a great manager. Took Juve to four consecutive UCL finals. An amazing feat. I won't make the argument about whether England would have won against Argentina had they played differently, but it was plainly obvious from the moment I saw the substitutions he set up England to lose.
