Is anyone excited for the Odyssey movie? Some controversy over casting, namely Matt Damon as Odysseus. I mean, he's a very capable actor. On SNL last weekend, it didn't even look like he was reading the cue cards. But someone else made an Odyssey movie like last year with Ralph Fiennes. He's way better as Odysseus. Was Christian Bale too busy remaking Newsies 2? Does he even make movies anymore? Surely, he could have played it. I can't complain too much. Tarantino and Scorsese have a DiCaprio fascination going on which I can't stand. DiCaprio almost ruined The Departed for me. I love that movie! Funniest thing I've ever seen and one of the few movies Matt Damon is actually great. At least I can see Damon over Dicaprio gouging out the eye of a cyclops, but Fiennes makes both of them look like Disney actors. I feel like Nolan won't score with this one. Memento and Inception were cool. His other movies aren't of any interest to me.

It's generating a few controversies. The adaption Nolan used has been criticized. It is described as a more direct and modern retelling, from the dialogue to the interpretation of the values. It's been likened to "Homer without heroes." Unlike other epic adaptions, the actors in this sound like they are at Starbucks. For me, the biggest problem is when it's compared to another recent version of the film: Here's the trailer for Nolan's film: Here's the trailer for the one with Ralph Fiennes, from 2024: IMO Chris Nolan is great at visuals, but I think he's weak dealing with classic literature. Shame because after the Odyssey, we could have had the Aeneid. It's considered the sequel. The Iliad (which was famously filmed as Troy) is the prequel. He had real potential to do a trilogy of great films, maybe the definitive films of these epic poems, and I think he blew it. Think about it. How can he do a prequel with Elliot Page as Achilleas? You can't go from Ralph Fiennes, who got into amazing shape and looked like he survived 20 years of war and voyage, to Matt Damon who looks like his next shoot is a Dunkin Donuts commercial with Ben Affleck.
And then he says, "we'll probably be at war with the Chinese in 20-odd years"... That was 20 years ago!

I am definitely looking forward to Nolan's The Odyssey. I hope though he doesn't deviate much from the core philosophy and ethos of the work . The armor I saw in one preview would look nothing like that , so I only hope he did that as a revision for modernity sake and nothing more . I am also in the same camp with you on " The Return " as it differs from other typical Odyssey adaptations by stripping away all mythology, gods and monsters to present a grounded intimate and psychologically realistic homecoming focused on trauma, guilt and the humanity of Odysseus and Penelope. It focuses exclusively on the final section of the epic, exploring the emotional wreckage of war rather than the fantastical adventure that we are all usually accustomed to. And for that alone it deserves much much praise. As it resonates with any man today who suffers from previous psychological trauma . Anyone who has ever served in the military, or works in emergency related healthcare, or for all types of first responder work and so on. Odysseus in this depiction cannot forgive himself for his past transgressions nor can he recognize himself anymore after witnessing all the horror and grief , thus he feels alienated and unworthy of love and admiration. Any man today who feels like a stranger among loved ones , due to the weight of his own past and that knowledge which he cannot unsee , knows this feeling . There is also one very touching piece in the Odyssey, which has stuck with me since I first read the work in high school , where Odysseus finally after twenty years seperated sees Argo , his best and most faithful hunting dog one final time . Argo dutifully whilst being neglected and left in poor condition in his old state upon a dung heap, has patiently waited hanging on just long enough to recognize and greet his returned master Odysseus one final time. Even though Odysseus is disguised as a beggar Argo can still recognize him , and because he has been rendered immobile and left neglected, he can only muster but a tail wag and head bow for his master one final time before he peacefully passes knowing that he has fulfilled his duty. Odysseus not wanting to unveil his disguise cannot break character so he can only lament his loss by looking away and shedding one tear. Homer was beyond exceptional in writing that scene. Anyone who has ever had a trusty dog once in their life, and with that gone threw the pain they experience once they pass on, can relate to this touching scene in the Odyssey. Homer from 800 B.C really knew how to hit men in " the feelz " . Nam sayin?

Honestly, it's very little money. I'm sure it generates some good will to and a positive international image for Canada. Checks all the right boxes for "progressive" causes, but making an actual difference in people's lives is what matters. The CEO and founder is Wale Adeosun. At least he's African with a lot of high level investment experience. That I do admire. Personally, I don't think any politician has a right to use taxpayer money to fund anything like this, abroad or domestic. Let Carney go around asking all the very rich Canadians to help fund this initiative. Too often money goes into these things and then all kinds of shady things can happen. Unless something meets a national security interest, there's no other justification for any federal government to spend money.
Everything you wrote in this post was well worth the read. On this point, though, I am looking forward to it, but I was hoping for more movies like it. Maybe we'll still get a treatment of the Aeneid, but more likely by someone else.
