Watching the 83 point drubbing of Nigeria makes me glad we don't dominate soccer like basketball. Following the USMNT wouldn't be half as fun, exciting or interesting. We'll probably win gold in basketball, but really, what does it mean? Anything less than gold will be disappointment. We're clearly the best in that field. Nobody really cares about international basketball, because, although improved in recent years, the competition is still poor. As much as we complain about mediocrity in soccer, we need to remember that most alternatives are actually worse. If the US ever wins the World Cup, it will mean more than all the basketball golds combined.
Very bad analogy. In bball their us, Spain and that's mostly it. In soccer there is so much competition that one team will not be on top forever. Yes some teams dominate for spells (Spain) but another team will rise up. I want to see the us reach the pinnacle of soccer atleast once in my life time.
I don't think you quite understood my point. I also want to reach the pinnacle in my lifetime. I'm saying IF soccer, like basketball, was a sport this country completely dominated through the years, following the USMNT wouldn't be near as interesting or exciting. Competition is a good thing.
It will be priceless to hear the excuses from the fans of the other team and it will also be priceless to see the other country devolve into full-scale chaos. For sure, the other team's fans will find every little detail to cheapen such a victory, out of jealousy.
I enjoy our underdog status. Makes it more run to root for a team that you are never sure what is going to happen.
I love everything USA, but the USA Basketball games don't give me too much enjoyment if they win by 30+ points. As for US Soccer not dominating, soccer as a global game, the playing field is MUCH more level, and it will always be like that. In the next three cycles, one of which I believe we will get to the semi finals (2018 or 2022) soccer will continue to grow and we will see teams like the Red Bulls and Galaxy get even more European talent to market with. Does anyone else think we will eventually see Cristiano Ronaldo in the MLS? Maybe in like 8 years but ya never know...
Yeah, that is rough. I havent wathced one game of the men's tournament. Too painful. Also I have yet to replace my shattered $50 studio headphones that I threw against the wall when that godddamn fluke goal went in.
I see what you're saying. I wanna reach elite status, but I'm ok with working hard, getting better, and winning. I don't expect to win every game, but I want teams to fear us.
That's only likely to happen if that "other country" is Mexico, whether or not they're involved in the final as well (but especially if they are). If (a big if) we win the World Cup, we'll likely see riots in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Los Angeles. And that's the short list.
[quote="Does anyone else think we will eventually see Cristiano Ronaldo in the MLS? Maybe in like 8 years but ya never know...[/quote] I bet possibly sooner than that. Did you see that recent video of Ronaldo where he says he wants to play here oneday?
No, I am not shallow. I merely thought it would be funny to see how angry the world got, since they mock the US and our country's team. I am American; I want to see my team win and if possible, humiliate the other team in front of the entire universe. That is the way of a fan of any sport. Sorry you're politically correct. The world is not politically correct and neither am I. Deal with it.
Dont mean to troll but the USA should be slighted because they dont really compete in the sport. Every where the sport just keeps growing while the USA remains stagnant at best. Asians are now competing (take Japan, both men and women, and korea at this olympics), Poor south/central americans team are also improving. The USA really needs to pick it up because the gap, if things remain like this, will grow insurmountable.
I feel like this thread was created cause nothing is happening in the world of USMNT until we play you guys in Azteca, pretty sad but no worries like always we come and rescue USSF from bankruptcy thanks to our money.
The US has no true basketball rival, I can't name another country that can produce talent at the rate the US can. Spain/Argentina sends out teams with a couple of all-stars and a batch of great role players but the US Olympic squad is an effin All-Star/Hall of fame calibur team coached by a legend. US basketball games end up being highlight reels, not interesting at all, you won't see Americans going crazy over winning the Gold in basketball. The US being a world champion in soccer would be a bigger deal and I'm willing to bet on that.
If our soccer team won at the rate our basketball team does and in the manner they do, I actually think I would be quite fine. I rather enjoy winning and not everyone is a Nigeria basketball team. Take, for instance, Lithuania. Was that too boring for some in this thread today? Sorry, I just don't envision being "too good" as a real problem.
I actively root against the US basketball team. The only downside I can see to them losing is that it might have the unfortunate side effect of making basketball more popular in other countries. I would support removing basketball as an Olympic sport, why is it still around when baseball and softball have been eliminated? Baseball is popular in more countries than just the US, Lithuania, and Philippines...
Basketball is more popular than baseball in Europe. FIBA, the basketball equivalent of FIFA, has a world rankings that include more countries than the a baseball world rankings if there was such a thing would include.
