KPRC had a little story about the HS throwball games this weekend at the Oven during the 6 o'clock news. What was disheartening was the facilities manager making the comment about removing all semblances of soccer from the stadium and the field. Something about not wanting it to look like a soccer stadium. I think I know what he was getting at, but I found his wording a bit disturbing. don't be shocked when our pitched looks like a zit faced teenager after an hour in front of the mirror after the upcoming month. That's a lot of throwball on throwball virgin turf. I pretty sure some of those big boys where be wearing 3/4 inch metal studs. Here't to hoping they replace the divots and roll it after each game. UGH.
Here's hoping that the suburban parents who don't want to actually LIVE in an urban environment, but now suddenly want to give their kids the opportunity to have an "urban" experience, will be the ones PAYING to replace the divots and have the turf rolled
Just have them stomp the divots the way they do at polo matches. Their kids ruined the pitch, they can fix it.
Saw the story while on the treadmill - no sound but saw Doug Hall and the groundskeeper being interviewed. Looked like the goal posts were up but no lines. Based on the physical size and condition of the groundskeeper, he did not appear like a guy who was ever fit to go the full 90, so I may infer he is more interested in pointyball than soccer. I hope he doesnt have the "get the commie-playing pansies off the field before they ruin it" mentality. I'm sorry to be so negative but football can really tear this field up, especially if it rains during the game. Lots of activity at the stadium in September.
Meh, if Wembley Stadium can host multiple codes of football, our stadium in Texas should be no problemo.
Wembley's turf has been installed for awhile. It rarely gets to 100 degrees F in London and it's not a club's home pitch. Oh, and they rarely play throwball there.
Major League Lacrosse is looking at expansion maybe to Austin in two years. Someone on some boards said-where would they play? They can't play in a HS football stadium. I just snickered and thought-that guy isn't from Texas.
You ever see the size of the kids on the lines of the top 5A teams? These guys are what used to be college size 20 years ago. Huge.
Comcast has Local 2 News on demand so I dialed up last night's 6 o'clock news and watched the segment - the groundskeeper did say he wanted to remove all signs or semblance of soccer from the field and make it look like a football stadium. The takeaway is they want to show off how good of a football stadium it is so they can get it to host playoff games. I will note that playoff games will be mostly from mid-November on. The interview was businesslike but I did sense they may have been a little too eager to have this football game at BBVA Compass. In some ways it's just a dry run for TSU football. Also, Randy McIlvoy will be there on Friday night doing his HS report so we can see what the field looks like after the game.
That was my understanding as well, I'm not thrilled if we're looking at Friday night high school games followed by Saturday Dynamo matches.
Hey, they can do what they want to fill up the stadium calendar and make money. But they (Canetti) made an awful lot of comments about how soccer was first, no football lines, etc. when they were developing this thing.
The stadium site doesn't list any high school football games on its schedule other than the ones this weekend. Hopefully it stays that way.
Well this is the testrun/commercial for future games. Not to mention there are a few TSU games already scheduled, but all-in-all that's what 5 games? Eh...
Let me rephrase, they made it clear that this was "our home" and we all know that TSU games were a necessary political evil. My guess is that while that was true, Doug Hall's job is now to fill up stadium dates and the condition of the pitch is secondary. As a profit-motivated stadium operation I understand this. It just doesn't exactly line up with the assurances given that Dynamo were tenant 1 and 1a, no football lines like UH (although not sure line paint science has developed to take it off of grass fully), etc. i swear i saw that the lease prohibited TSU from painting logos on the field. This will likely only be an issue if the Dynamo make a run in the playoffs in November and there is a quick turnaround.
for a guy in sales and i assume a business degree you sure are prentending to be naive. give me 20 minutes and i can poop you out a press release that touts you as the next Mother Teresa. "all in the game, yo. all in the game." - Omar
Oh, not naive. Just no one should be surprised if our field looks and plays like crap at playoff time.
Ever notice that Wembley and Azteca have hosted a World Cup Grand Final??? And thus who are we in Houston, where gridiron is religion btw, who are we with our little stadium BBVA to worry about enduring what other legendary stadiums have had no issues with enduring once in a while. As a business man myself I would do everything possible to have our doors open for shop. Pay bills and get people used to coming on down to our orange soccer ground for everything from concerts to any other code of football. The grounds crew don't get paid to just water the lawn!
