It's short, so I'll quote the whole thing. Does anyone object to that? I don't. It's not necessarily the whole picture, but I don't think it's wrong.
The BBC is a well-known libuuuraaal organization - that's why they never mentioned Iraq in this report. Everyone in Dick Cheney's office knows Iraq was involved with September 11th. Remember Mohammed Atta had a permanent suite of rooms in Prague where he had a regular date-night with Iraqi intelligence.
I don't agree with the tone since it is targeted at kids but I don't disagree with the substance. If a kid where hearing that, the slant almost makes it sound like the attacks were justified. I think you could present a story to say that we have troops there. That our customs -- such as allowing women to serve -- are contrary to the way many Saudis live and that one radical group used those differences to attempt to justify attacks on innocent people.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_1610000/newsid_1612600/1612653.stm No mention how Britain itself created most of the international problems in the ME. http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_3470000/newsid_3479900/3479961.stm Britain created Iraq. After that, apparently all Saddam's fault. http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_1900000/newsid_1909200/1909217.stm No mention of Balfour Declaration.
To be fair to the BBC, I don't think they would have any problem blaming Britain, as well as the US, for most of the world problems.
Revisionist Posting I rewrote the post after I found the Guides Index! http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/guides/default.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_1610000/newsid_1613000/1613043.stm "Some people were unhappy about this and it led to lots of problems in Northern Ireland." Hmm. Only religion covered? http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_4180000/newsid_4188200/4188287.stm "Islam is the second largest religion in Britain ... More than 1.6 million Muslims live in Britain." This must be news to the various Christian denominations. http://www.guardian.co.uk/religion/Story/0,,821568,00.html "there are between 17 million and 27 million Anglicans in Britain" http://www.guardian.co.uk/religion/Story/0,,714699,00.html "There are about 6 million people in the UK Catholic community"
Re: Revisionist Posting Christians are regarded as one religion here. Nobody in England gives a shit if you are catholic or protestant.
Re: Revisionist Posting None of this has anything to do with the thread topic and is nothing but a threadjack. If you want to discuss BBC screw-ups, biases, mistakes and misrepresentations, then, fair enough, start your own thread. This is about whether or not the explanation of the reasons for September 11th offered by the BBC for kids is valid.
I object to it. It portrays AQ as a legitimate organization with negotiable demands. There is no mention of bin Ladin's ludicrous call for a resumption of the Caliphate, for example.
I agree with Chris M. on this one, for the most part. While it is factually accurate, it isn't really complete, and as Chris pointed out, the tone of it makes it sound like a perfectly justified act. I understand they were probably trying to simplify things a bit, since it is for kids, but they didn't really do it the best way.
Kids can handle the whole story. This BBC thing is patronizing, not to mention incredibly incomplete.
Half a truth is still a lie. The only face to put on AQ is one of a cold blooded mass murderer who kills men, women and children based on a medevil mindset.
Re: Revisionist Posting Except for the anti-Catholic royal family, which is permitted to retain their place in the line of succession unless they marry a Roman Catholic.
I do agree that it doesn't get into Al Queda being a bunch of mass murdering thugs as much as it should.
Re: Revisionist Posting the first time someone likely to be king/queen wants to marry a catholic, that "law" has the life expectancy of a fart in a hurricane - until then they'll spend saturdays burning catholics at the stake as usual.
Seriously... They are widely thought to have been behind the attacks? Has it not been established without a doubt that al-Qaeda was responsible for the attacks? I wonder if people might find fault with the following study guide: "The way the Jewish community controlled much of Germany's economy made some people very angry, including a group called the Nazis - who are widely thought to have been behind the holocaust."
So you believe its fair to extract one small example from my point to make it appear that this is the sole cause? If it helps you understand my point, just remove the example. If you DON'T think they are motivated by our presence in the middle east than you are a fool.
BINGO As if the absence of US troops in Saudia Arabia would have prevented Al Qaeda from targeting the US. If not that reason, they would have attacked because the US are Israel's biggest ally. Is there any acceptable reason for flying a jetliner into an office building?
Re: Revisionist Posting I did say England, but taking it broader, they are still just regarded as christians, which was the whole point.
No. I just couldn't see any relevance for that point. It was standing on the diving board overlooking that big "they attacked us because they hate us for our freedoms" swimming pool.
did it say it was acceptable? Imagine a 6 year old kid asking the question, "why did they do it?", "why do they hate us?" and needing to give an answer. The kid already knows it's a horrible thing to do, killing all those people. It doesn't need an extra moral judgement.
