Hmmm... I would have preferred a loan to relegation-bound Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga. At least that way, he'd be getting first team AND first division experience. They're so bad, he'd REALLY have a good chance at starting. Buff, what's your sense - is this really a good move for a 28 year old fringe national teamer?
Didn't Vanney have a falling out with the coach at Bastia? Also, isn't he available on a free after this season or does he have one more year left on his contract?
No fallout--just isn't regularly starting under Gil, who seems to want to use wingbacks, which Vanney may not have enough speed to play.
It's not a bad choice. It puts him in a position to get picked up by a better club if he impresses. I'm sure that he will considering he was a very good MLS player and I highly doubt France's 2nd division is as good as MLS. Also, if he can save Nancy from relegation he'll be a hero.
Vanney leaves Bastia for... Getting to play is always good and maybe positioning for a role on a team in a better league, but I bought Vanney would have left MLS to play in the French 2nd division if that was the choice 8)
Maybe, maybe not... The tone of the text so far is that Nancy "would like to sign" Vanney and that Nancy is waiting for "the definitive OK from Bastia this afternoon" while noting that Vanney himself is in agreement to be loaned for the season. In other words, it doesn't sound like a done deal yet.
The island fever one would get living on Corsica would make Nancy sound like a decent alternative. If he plays well, he could always get on with another D1 French side.
The guy's got no kids, is 30 minutes from Italy France or Spain by plane and makes mid 6 figures. That island fever must really get him down.

I laughed when I read it, but now I wonder if it really was funny. This one is funny too. Metrogo, my girlfriend is from around there. But she's sleeping. I woke her up and she's looking at a map now, I'm not sure why. It turns out, she's not really from there. So, I can't elaborate on Dave's answer. Wait, now she's telling me that since Nancy is so close to Strasbourg there is probably a German influence and Strasbourg is famous for their beer and sausage. I asked her what else do they eat and she gasped as if to say I've told you enough.
Vanney goes nowhere http://www.asnl.net/news.html Nancy reports that the proposed loan was not accepted by Bastia. This is logical to me as its not like Vanney doesn't play at all for Bastia. Since he has had some playing time & is somewhat useful you would think that Bastia would only accept a transfer for a fee. On a related note, the Bastia web site reports that Vanney played over the weekend for the reserves. I won't give away the result but will report that Vanney got a straight red card in the 56th minute.
