The sad part is, he would actually make Barça's defense better.

    Hierro wouldn't go to Barca!

The only club Hierro would leave Real Madrid for is Malaga, that is a certainty.

I was joking about Hierro. The Real Madrid player in question will send shockwaves according to Jaume Llaurado. Fernando Morientes seemed to be the most likely candidate. But if I want revenge on the Figo deal, I will go for Raul or Portillo. Of course, Raul will not leave Real Madrid for Barcelona.

to the extent that such a move is designed to 'stick it to madrid' (and i suspect this is at least as big an appeal to barca fans as is getting a decent player); i think picking up morientes would be pretty effective.

as madrid's XI becomes more and more mercenary, the heart of madrid's support grows fonder and fonder of the home grown talent. i think a primary reason for ronaldo's failure to win over the fans for much of the year was the displacement of morientes, who's been hugely effective over the last few years, as well as the stifling of portillo - both of whom are considered "one of us". many madrid supporters are sensitive to what perez's purchases are doing to "thier boys".

morientes strikes me as being the most likely. and it would definitely be sticking it to perez and valdano (at least among madrid's core support) - perhaps even more than some of the bigger stars.

I hope they make a great choice and a great move ...cause we need Barça to come up to the top of the Liga...cause boy they sure are down right now.

I mean they have great players already I think the problem is the coaching at least that is my humble opinion. They got to get a great coach first then think of signing any great player you want.

    Nuff Said!

Frankly, all these rumours stink of blatant electioneering and I would be very surprised if any of them were true. Today's papers also point to David Beckham or Thierry Henry as the target of one of the presidential candidates.

I think it's unlikely that any top-calibre player would commit in any binding way until they can negotiate with someone in real authority (i.e. the elected president). In the meantime it looks like these are ploys by players' agents to push their current clubs for better salaries/conditions etc.

Sad to say, large numbers of fans (not just of Barcelona) tend to be easily blinded by these promises when they should be concentrating on choosing a figure who can command respect (why *did* they elect Gaspart?) and has a proven track record in managing large organizations.

The stories/rumours around Figo's signing for Real Madrid never cease to amaze me. It seems as though he signed a legally binding agreement with Florentino, never expecting him to win the presidential election (remember, Lorenzo Sanz had just won his second European Cup) to put pressure on the Barcelona board to improve his salary/conditions. They called his bluff, Florentino won, and he left.

Is it me, or is it my cynical mind, in that this sounds way too simlpe. I wonder what Figo's face-to-face negotiations with Gaspart were all about and why he would gamble with his future in such a way

On the other hand, as a biased Real supporter, he's not done too badly with them. His profile is, if anything, even bigger than when he was at Barcelona.

Don't you remember the game against Dortmund? Fernando Morientes told Del Bosque he could F---OFF cause he wasn't going in at the 89th minute.

Morientes is probably looking for a flat on Diagonale right now.

Macmanan or Morientes seem likely. But I wouldn't consider those players a major aquisition for Barca like the Figo situation was for Real. I like the idea of getting Roberto Carlos, He's merengue through and through, if we could get him that would be like shoving a stake through Real heart! Now RAUL would be the biggest upset in the entire history of the Spanish League. That would be SWEEEET!

Despite missing the penalty in the world cup, i was extrememly impressed with Joaquin's finese and ball control. He was able to Nutmeg and Craddle the ball along the line past defenders and awesome number of times. I remember reading about the possiblity of his leaving Real Bettis for either Real or Barca, does anyone know anything about it?
