What you trying to say is, you are a Canadian Eurosnob. Guess what, I care less for Eurosnobs like yourself. MLS matters to me and to most the people around here. Why waste your time here.

    Miami is lousy MLS market.

Sure, football is big here, but not towards a pro-USA market.

I live in Sunny Isles Beach, which is in the same county with Miami ( Dade County ), I used work in Miami's Kendall area and played indoor soccer there, no one cares for MLS and don't who was the Funsion or Mutiny.

Probably not dreaming, probably joking <ahem>.

Well, Nerroth may have no sense of humor, but given the clubs he lists, the fact that he's posting on an MLS board, and the fact that he implied that he didn't like what he referenced, you've stretched the definition of "eurosnob" to an absurd degree.

Seriously, yes eurosnobs exist in America and in around 95 percent of countries around the world. That's why the big time European soccer is more popular than domestic leagues from the US to Norway to Indonesia and practically every country in between. Eurosnobs can be very annoying and stupid. But the Eurosnob witch hunters on these boards, with their name calling and jingoistic chest-pounding, have surpassed them in that regard.

Looking around for this on the blogs (goal.com never really breaks anything itself), I find a couple sources:

One, which made me think this was old reports, was a blog dated Sep 3, citing Spanish daily El Pais here:
    http://www.elpais.com/articulo/depo...o/injurias/elpepudep/20080116elpepudep_17/Tes
(Though the blog was Sep 3, the date on the original article says January).

However, I also found this blog, citing Catalan magazine Sport:
    http://fcbtransfers.blogspot.com/2008/09/will-there-be-barcelona-usa-in-2011.html

This one says a meeting took place on it last Wednesday. It didn't link back, and I can't track down Sport on the web, except to confirm that the print magazine exists (if it has a web presence, I can't find it). So take that fwiw.

I'm actually an Irishman, but I hope to also be Canadian in a few years - and I personally care a lot more about MLS than about any league in Europe, and more about the CCL than the UEFA CL.

But believe me, even when trying to talk up MLS, or the CCL, with other Europeans, few seem to be all that bothered.

Thanks for shooting the messenger, though.

Maybe in Spain there might be more who know about Chivas and América - but the main clubs in the Americas that people would know at least a little about would be Boca and River, or maybe one or two of the bigger Brazilian clubs.

It's not helped by how bloody hard it is to even get jerseys in Ireland - the likes of Adidas and others restrict certain kits to certain markets, so even a store that would want to order an MLS or PDM or other kit for you, they can't.

Well, I can have trouble picking the two apart. Must be the Aspie-ness - though I try not to make a habit of blaming it for my social shortcomings.

    Thank you... I think.

Maybe Garber can offer Barca (or the new owners of Man City or Roman or whoever) a deal on franchises - buy two MLS expansions, get one for free!

I'm sure their answer would be - dude, we shop at Nordstroms, not KMart.

This is absolutely absurd, to name a team in Miami after a team in Spain.

I understand that Barca is a brand, as much as it is the name of a city. But come on. This is so blatantly corporate. Please, MLS, don't name the team 'Barca' anything.

If the Blaugrana want to own a team in the US, that's fine with me. But at least allow Miami to have their own name.

This is tantamount to renaming LFC 'New York Liverpool'. It's incredibly stupid and small-minded, and it treats the fans as if they're a bunch of idiots. (Although, if we're talking about NYRB, it's accurate.) Look no further than MLS' visionary decision to name the team in LA 'Chivas USA'. What a complete disaster and what a complete joke.

If MLS wants Miami to have a similar color scheme to Barca, fine. If they want to have a relationship with Barca, fine too. Try and have many similarities . But do NOT name the team after another city.

MLS needs it's own identity. If all we do is ape the names of teams in other leagues, this league will remain in the eyes of many as a Mickey Mouse league. It's not, but stunts like this make it look like it is.

You can grow the business model and increase profits without allowing the integrity of the league (Chivas USA) to dissolve any further. It's bush-league, MLS. Don't do it.

If Barca FC owns a team in the US, then the name Barca FC USA would be fine with me. I'd much prefer that to another dumb name like half the teams have already. Such as: "Wizards" "Galaxy" "Earthquakes" "Crew" etc.

Changing Dallas from the Burn to Dallas FC was the best change this league has ever seen. I'd prefer to see more teams follow suit. Except no more United teams with the possible exception of a team in Minneapolis/St. Paul which could be united.. or perhaps Kansas City because it is half Kansas and half Missouri.

    so in conclusion...

Dallas FC, Toronto FC = Good
Barca FC USA, Chivas USA = fine
DC United = united with who exactly?
Real Salt Lake = huh? royal really?
Kansas City Wizards = WTF do wizards have to do with soccer in Kansas City?

who cares about the names, as long as there is great soccer (no ping pong) and great competition, who cares about the names.

if im not putting any of my own money on it, i may as well enjoy great soccer, great women, and great beer. if the name is neo-maya, good for them, thats there money and their problem

I'll take whatever we can get personally, but does anyone really think "Barcelona Miami" or "Barca USA" would even get close to becoming the actual name? Chivas doesn't necessarily represent any other city, so it's slightly more appropriate, but only very slightly. They can keep the colors, kits, and even the crest with a few tweaks and I'm good with FC Miami. The look can be similar enough to be recognized as Barca, that's fine, but the name with another city in it is ridiculous.

They already had one team here that played in a different city than it was named after, and in this case that city would be on another continent. And even if the club has a totally unique identity, everyone in the known soccer universe would know Barca was backing it. I don't think that if this happens "Barcelona" in any form will be in the name.

Why don't they just combine the two names of the cities and add fc on the end? Think of all the AWESOME names we could come up with.:D
My personal favorite is Miarca FC but I'd be okay with Barami FC too.

But on a more serious note would anyone be okay with CF Barcamerica?

well said, maybe everyone doesn't like our club names but at least it's one less cookie cutter trend we don't have to worry about.

Although, if it makes you feel more european to stick an FC after every city's name then by all means keep on posing kasmatsu.

Agreed. We happen to love our name here in San Jose. It's got alot more history than most of the crappy cookie cutter names out there.

I agree we don't need every team to be called United, FC, Atletico etc. That is ridiculous and laughable.

While that would be my first choice, if Barca is making the team buy I doubt they'll do it.

Those names are really rare in europe overall. All the teams have names like the MLS ones... "Red Devils" "Blues" "Magpies" "Gunners" "Hammers"

The difference is that they aren't plastered all over their badges and kits.

Why can't we have city pride instead of needing some name to rally around?

The reason I like Dallas FC better than Dallas Burn isn't because I like the FC on the end. I just like their badge being a nice bull instead of a big BURN. Yet they didn't have to name their team the Dallas Steers to do that. Now instead of being called the burn, they get called the Hoops. Yet they didn't have to name themselves the Dallas Hoops and make a badge with a big HOOPS on it to do that...

I don't like Wizards for KC because I would prefer a nice KC script kind of badge like the Royals baseball logo, or on the chiefs arrowhead logo over the huge WIZARDS we how now.

there is nothing wrong with having names... it just doesn't have to be plastered on everything the team wears or sells.

Even just comparing to other US sports, pretty much all the teams have some logo or badge that isn't just the freaking name in bold letters.

But I guess that makes me a poseur because I don't like that every team with a name's logo is just the name while all the teams with "cookie cutter" naming have unique interesting badges and logos. With the exception of the Chicago Fire, who have a good badge and a meaningful name.

I wonder why this thread is still news and analysis.

If someone is willing to commit to spending millions a year in Miami for at the very least 10+ years I say "Go For It!" I don't think anyone here will guarantee much ROI.
