True, and what should be remembered too is that there isn't a France Football panel that sits down and deliberates based on set criteria, but instead there was always a collection of individual journalists from different countries with their own ideas. So although certain narratives exist and there are tendencies (and even to an extent guidelines from France Football) to reward certain things, in the end the individual journalists make their individual votes (like we have done here too) and the totals are tallied at the end.

So it's not invalid as such for one recipient to win on peak level one year, and another year another player wins based a lot on clutch performance when his team wins trophies....(and sometimes the margins are very small - eg Bobby Charlton and Eusebio in 1966 - albeit for 1st place votes there was a pattern favouring Charlton, which potentially was influenced indeed by end results....not to say Charlton wasn't generally very good in that year and the 65/66 season overall where he was Player of the Year in the English league too, and was a key part of a Man United team that had a great win in Lisbon vs Eusebio's Benfica.... and it was just that nearly everyone had Eusebio in their top 3 and about half of the voters had him 2nd)

Yeah, that was the only game Juventus (arguably the best team in the world - they had a great start in general and bounced back vs Roma in the next game too) lost in that first half of 1985/86 Serie A, and among Maradona's best/most significant games I would think.

Italian player ratings in the media at that time (as opposed to for example the 1950s) didn't tend to be very high very often though. Probably a lot of people would think he played a 9 out of 10 match anyway.
In the return game he was not so good though, and probably Laudrup was the best out of him, Platini and Maradona that time I'd say

The first example is often cited as one of the biggest mistakes in Ballon d'Or history (Cruyff being rated so low).

The 2nd one is fictitious. Since Maradona was not eligible, we can look at other WPOTY awards, such as Gazzetta dello Sport Ballon d’Or 1988.

Maradona was in fact ranked above all 3 Dutchmen, along with Hugo Sanchez who has nothing to do with the EURO.





This is not to say that Vinicius is 100% the rightful winner, but I don't think public disapproval is unwarrented in general just because the award is given for an NT accomplishment. It is not mandatory to be that way, fx Messi 2010.

 

Yeah, I remember Vegan10 (I think) posted that Gazzetta poll result before, although arguably the IFFHS Player of the Year could provide a better guide I guess (where Van Basten came 1st and Maradona 2nd), or even the World Soccer poll (but it's a reader's poll, and mostly with British voters who had less exposure to Serie A at that time and some anti-Maradona feelings might have influenced that vote too even maybe - I know there were overseas readers too though and I saw a report about the Player of the Century voting in 1999 that referred to some of them casting votes in that for example)

I noticed a piece in the Daily Record (Scotland) in early 1989 where Cruyff is cited as having the opinion that Van Basten is the best player in the world (albeit that's different to player of the year - in both cases I guess Maradona would be a prime contender in various opinions though at the time and another newspaper piece I spotted referred to his Serie A form causing a big offer from Saudi Arabia). I think Cruyff always rated Van Basten very highly though, and did put him 3rd in his own Player of the Century top 5 (for France Football's poll), also including Beckenbauer, Platini, himself and Pele (so no Maradona there either).

To coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Ballon d'Or in 2016, France Football published an internationalized reevaluation of the awards presented before 1995, when only European players were eligible to win the award.[17][58] 12 out of the 39 Ballons d'Or presented during this time period would have been awarded to South American players; in addition to Pelé—seven times—and Diego Maradona—twice—Garrincha, Mario Kempes, and Romário were retrospectively recognized as worthy winners.[58][61] The original recipients, however, remain unchanged.[3]
