I guess now will come the posts about what a terrible guy Balboa is because he wasn't really hurt last year. He just didn't want to play because he's lazy and he doesn't like the MetroStars, blah, blah, blah...

You know, Balboa is a terrible guy, he wasn't really hurt last year. I bet you he doesn't want toplay because he is just lazy. Or maybe he just doesn't like the Metrostars, he might have a grudge.....

Celo at 100k with incentives sounds like a fair deal.....they should get that done quick enough...

    Can the season start already?

To be honest, I think $100,000 is too much, given the severe salary cap limitations of MLS. Jolley, who has been a dependable performer, gets about $110,000. Balboa in his prime is a far better player than Jolley, no doubt, but Balboa at 35 coming off an injury...I'm not so sure. I'd offer less and make up the difference with playing time incentives.

Did they ask him to get a hair cut too?

$100k plus incentives sounds about right to me. A healthy Balboa is quite an addition to this team. While he didn't play at all last season (those 5 minutes in NE don't count), he would make a nice tandem in central defense with Eddie Pope. Even though he is 35, I believe we can expect big things from him in that role.

A back line of jolley/balboa/pope/akwari should make Tim Howard pretty happy.

bradley doesn't play a four back D.... he plays zone D, which is one of the reasons you saw Petke get shipped out, and probably why you'll see Jolley get shipped out.

  9. My prediction is that he would retire and we were never going to see him in a Metro shirt again. I'm sticking with it.

It still takes players to execute zone defense: usually 3 or 4. I don't see how this disqualifies Jolley. Is he incapable of playing zone defense?

The Fire under bob bradley played a 3 man zone defense. We saw what happened to Jolley & Petke when the Metros went to a three man zone defense, and so did bradley.

"I guess now will come the posts about what a terrible guy Balboa is because he wasn't really hurt last year."

No just more posts on why we took this guy last season without having to take a fitness/stress test first and passing it.

Even with a salary cut we need to be sure he is healthy first before offering him anything.

Mike said "bradley doesn't play a four back D.... he plays zone D, which is one of the reasons you saw Petke get shipped out, and probably why you'll see Jolley get shipped out."

    How are you feeling Mike?

A 4 back D in the modern game is a zone D. But, so is a three back D.

Why would they get Rid of Jolley? He is a very good outside back when Oz played with three backs.

If Balboa is healthy he will probably be a defensive mid, and Richie Williams would be there as a back up.

Also Balboa would be a backup for Pope who would move in as center back. Maybe they will use Pope as a wing back but I doubt it.

    I'm with you on that!

As far as Marcelo's deal goes, it's fair. He isn't the only "old-timer" to get a pay cut in the league. There's no reason he shouldn't have a decent season.

    Balboa........35......coming off injury.

    Why tie up $100G?

    Offer less with incentives.
