And that would be Bernt Haas, whose Swiss side played Croatia to a scoreless draw yesterday in Leiria. Haas now has the unenviable task of facing the strikers of England and France in his next two matches. Hopefully, it will at least provide him valuable experience for next season. On another note, I thought Albion's new signing Martin Albrechtsen was a Danish international, but he is not in Denmark's Euro 2004 squad.
He's also our first ever representative in the European Championships. I'm hoping he has a stinker on Thursday and a blinder on Monday.
It's a bit hard to believe that in the European Championship era (1960-present), with all the great players who were capped for England whilst playing for the Albion (among them Astle, 'Bomber' Brown, Regis, Cunningham, Bryan Robson etc.) that a Swiss defender is the first Baggie to play at the European Championship Finals. Obviously Robbo played in his share of Euros, but I guess that was after he joined ManYoo. Koumas and Andy Johnson might have been the second and third, had Wales not faltered at the end of their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign.
So 'stinker' for Haas it is then - and no doubt a few mixed emotions for supporters of Albion and England. Haas' very rash challenges against Gerrard and Cole not only got him sent off... but no doubt earned him additional stick at every Premiership ground next season. And so ends his part in this tournament.
