I admire your effort to find the good in people, but . . . The coach changed the score submitted by the referee after the coach had signed it and out of the presence of the referee. Even if he thought it was the right score, that is cheating—he had absolutely no right to make changes. (Why the field Marshall gave him the paper is a whole separate question.)

If he thought the score was wrong, he shouldn’t have signed the game card. Changing the facts listed on the game card after he and, presumably, the referee has signed off on different facts is bad regardless of which facts are right.

Did the ref agree with the adjusted score? I think there are two documents/locations in play here so I may be confused.

Presumably the coach from the other team had already signed for 5-3, as well? I don't see how you could glean anything BUT ill-intent.

No, the ref scratched out the 6 and changed it back to a 5 on the report. There are 2 sections on the game report to show the final score. at the top, the "5" was untouched so that's the original score from the referee. On the bottom, this is where the scratch outs took place. At the end of the day, both places to write the score read "5".

The big indictment is that the coach scratched out one area to mark the score and didn't realize there were two different areas to mark the score. That shows that he was trying to act quickly and rushed through it.

Absolutely the league should be dealing with the coach. If he’s changing the winning score after the fact what else is he willing to change? The losing score to alter goal differential? Cards given?

It’s not in our lane, but it’s definitely in the league admin’s league. And I would also question why a field Marshall or anyone else would allow a coach to change it like that. There are all kinds of red flags there.

Same thing happened to ours... I'll be driving up to Dallas to run the test on the day we had ours originally scheduled. Something, something, training schedules

Yep - very much a "power complex" of sorts there. You have to work with the kid here. Very teachable moment here, and the emeritus kind of blew it.

Gotta love High School Boys ...
We've already had one pushing set-to that resulted in yellows for both teams.

    1-0, hotly contested match.

Right at final whistle Blue shoves Green right in front of Blue bench. Quickly escalates into multiple kids squaring off. AR1 is doing his best to keep Blue off the field but has no chance. I have my back to Green bench trying to separate kids when I feel all of Green bench rushing on. AR2 is dealing with GK / striker battle. Punches are being thrown, it was ugly.

We all backed way off. I started to record numbers but quickly said screw it.
Guidance from our State is to not monitor post game stuff ... we gathered our gear and got the hell out of there.

I once sent in a report to the state saying everyone on both teams was either sent off for throwing punches or entering the field without permission. 35 reds. I think I set an outdoor record.

Sometimes you go big or go home.

Yes, same here in New Yawk as a result of a huge lawsuit involving the referees about a decade ago. This was as a result of a fight which took place at the post-match handshake and involved a player who suffered a broken jaw. The referees were tied up in court for nearly 2 years. Directive, get outta Dodge as quickly as you can. Personally, I try not to bring any bag to the pitch that I can not afford to have stolen. This can add to my ability for a quick escape as well as backing into my parking spot and situate my car as close the school exit as possible.

So, it was a tournament play, not a league. It was after the 3rd game of pool play, and the coach's team was eliminated from the tournament. His team would've been eliminated even with the extra goal that he tried to add. Not sure what the whole thing was about, but I'm not sure the TD could've done anything. Maybe if the coach had another team in the tournament but even then I think that's a stretch to punish another team that wasn't involved even if the coach of that team was. Kinda like you can't suspend a coach for his game with the 2011s when he got a red card with his 2009s.

IMO, the TD probably should consider whether or not he wants to accept this coach and his teams in future tournaments. That'd be the "punishment" direction I would take.

This statement should make any referee wonder why you/we even do it. If you can't feel safe enough to go officiate a game without planning a full exit strategy, maybe it's not worth it at all.

It still surprises me that a court and state would view referees running away while a mass fight is occurring and having no perspective to offer as superior to staying and tryin to prevent it or at least writing some stuff down.

Also my situation is funny because I bike to a bunch of games I do, so it usually has me parking literally on the field. If there’s ever a problem that arises postgame, I’ve already run off the field, picked up my bike, and I’m already booking it halfway down the street when fans are finally starting to file out of the gates

For high school, our state association wants all officials, in all sports, to leave as soon as possible after the end of the match. In basketball, they are out the door and on their way to the locker room before the clock operator even shuts off the horn. Nothing good is going to come from you hanging around to get the early reviews from the losing team players, coaches or spectators.

Misbehavior after the end of the game is the responsibility of the home school AD.

The phenomena of referees leaving their bags in the car was all new to me until I started officiating HS games.

You guys are running with your car fobs in your pocket? How?

Also, I've never needed to, but I like knowing that I have my phone with me in the event I've needed to call 911 if folks behave stupidly and feel I'm in danger.

Without your phone, how are you calling for help? You're going to rely on the same folks to call for you who see you with a large target on your back?

    I never understood this.

I did one game this fall with a guy who had to have over 20 keys on his ring and looked more like the HS custodians where we're officiating our games. He asked if he could use MY bag to store them in.

The match is over and he runs to his car (the only time he sprinted all day), forgetting that his keys are with me. He was actually annoyed that I didn't split as soon as the game was over. There was nothing going on in this game for anyone to think a fan or player would do something stupid.

If I ever get to the point where I have to run to my car/bike/Uber immediately after the final whistle, I'd rather give it up.

Some guys around here leave their keys on a rear tire or in the gas cap. Others just stash keys in the unlocked car.

If you’re wearing OSI shorts just stash them in the coin pocket. A veteran ref showed me that once and it’s genius.

I have a fairly bulky non-folding key and it works. It just goes sideways flush against the body.

In my 20s I used to bike to do indoor games just because I wanted to get more exercise in. One night we got a threat from an ejected player that he'd meet us in the parking lot after the game (other referee threw a guy out and implied that he'd use his pen as a weapon to protect himself from a perceived threat on the field.) I still had 2 games after that and all I could think about was how long was he going to hang out there and how was going to sneak away on my bike without him realizing it was me. Luckily, the last game ended at **12:20 AM** which apparently was too late for him, but I did have my head on a swivel the entire 5 miles home.

I actually heard that this happened to me after the fact, earlier this Fall for a different HS sport. I called a bunch of fouls against one team because they sucked and had no clue how to play, and had the athletic director throw out a mother who kept yelling loudly at me after each one from behind me. I had biked to the game, so when i was done I went out the main gate and went to the left down the street because that's the direction I was going, the parking lot was to the right out of the gate.

A few weeks later the athletic director told me they had banned both the parents from games for the rest of the season becuase apparently the father told other parents that he was going to be waiting for me in the parking lot to beat the shit out of me and they reported him. The laughter than ensued when I told the AD "well good thing I never even went into the parking lot, I biked home the other direction. He probably never even saw me" was classic
