Yankees attendances continue to decline - only 40,085 this season. NYCFC have sold 19,000/20,000 renewals and will start selling season tickets to the general public in October. I wonder if soccer will outsell baseball before we finally get a soccer specific stadium.
That's an interesting statement/hypothesis. To clarify, when you say "outsell baseball", over what period are we talking? You mean will NYC FC's average home attendance over 17 games beat the yankees' home 81 game average attendance? Or will NYC FC outsell the yankees when controlling for other factors like day of the week, number of games etc? I think it would be interesting analysis to compare the attendances during a subset of 17 Yankee home games vs 17 NYC FC home games, controlling for same day of the week - i.e only include Saturday nights Weds night, Sunday afternoon etc - whatever days/times both the Yankees and NYC FC have played. Otherwise, it's apples and oranges to compare the average attendance over 81 home games vs 17 home games.
Maybe I'll compare NYCFC and Yankees attendance while considering start times, but given the start times of the two leagues there may not be a good way of comparing attendance for games played on the same day of the week at the same time. MLS starts Sunday games at 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. The Yankees start their Sunday home games at 1:05 P.M. unless they are on Sunday Night Baseball. Most Yankees Saturday games are day games and most MLS Saturday games are night games.
I agree with you that there's no correlation but I think the Yankees would be slightly embarrassed. I feel like the Yankee organization currently treat us like second class citizens (no pun intended).
Well, you're preaching to the choir. I've been attending revs games in Foxboro for the past 20 years. The good news is your stay at Yankee Stadium is relatively short - I believe within the next 3-4 years you'll have your own home? Correct me if I'm wrong. That said, it's remarkable the Yankees are even sharing their stadium with a pro soccer team so kudos there. As it pertains to atttendance, if you want to embarrass the yankees (a bit) do a little analysis showing NYC stacks up well in similar games. Sure it's not going to be perfect like for like times as another poster suggested, but if for example the Yankees play at 1 or 2pm on a Sunday and NYC typically at 5pm, that could be a good comparison vs say a Friday night vs the red sox. Maybe even pull in a mets or red sox game when comparing to the RB derby, for example, to compare rivalry games. Of course it's not perfect - you may want to average a series given it's 3 or 4 games against a rival vs 1 opportunity to see their respective teams play.
NYCFC is hoping to get their own stadium, but without a site determined yet who knows how long it could take. Here's NYCFC's attendance for their 16 MLS home games: Saturday day: 27,645, 30,018 (2 games, 28,832 average) Saturday night: 27,545, 26,211, 24,042, 28,231 (4 games, 26,507 average) Sunday 2:30 P.M. or 3:00 P.M.: 27,533, 32,041 (2 games, 29,787 average) Sunday 5:00 P.M. or 7:00 P.M.: 43,507, 21,891, 25,384, 48,047 (vs. Red Bulls) (4 games, 34,707 average) Weekdays: 20,461, 23,315, 28,262, 25,075 (4 games, 24,278 average) Average: 28,701 The Yankees are averaging 39,981 in 2015 and 19 out of 30 MLB teams are averaging more than NYCFC.
It's cool to see Seattle averages more than the yankees - 43k vs 39k. Truly major league numbers - especially when the Seattle Mariners average 27.6k, far below the Sounders. Fun to see soccer have the catbird seat vs several of the "established" sports like basketball and hockey.
