Does anybody have a list of those players who have applied or could make themselves available for next years draft?

Never to early to look forward.

This begs an interesting question. For other than early entry collegiate players, is there any formal notification actually required for the draft?

I don't have a list, but I've heard that Alecko Eskandarian from UVA is planning on leaving school early to be drafted, and will to early.

Re: Re: Available Players for 2003 MLS Draft

Based on previous drafts, I believe that all graduating college players are automatically eligible, but all other players must be signed first or otherwise be specifically added to the pool.

After Cory Gibbs was picked last year, a lot of people were saying "we should take Berhalter" etc. But Gibbs was available because his rights had already been picked by Miami and were free because of contraction. Gibbs was picked by Miami even though he never signed because he was a graduating senior - but Taylor Twellman or Phil Salyer, for example, could not be picked until they came to an agreement with the league.

At least, I think that's how it works. We won't know about early entries for quite a while.

I hope DC drafts "Hamid Mehreioskouei", just so I can get a jersey and put "Mehreioskouei" on the back of it.

Hey, if you're looking for a creative mid, Arena's not your guy. But, if you're looking for a Dmid, he might be able to play in MLS. IMHO, he's that type of gritty player that gets overlooked. He kinda reminds me of Matt McKeon or Jeff Aunger. Big, physical, no-nonsense, tough defender that absolutely prevents attacks in his area. He's not going to impress you with his Zidane imitation, but at the end of the day his teams usually win.

How does a player get in the draft if they play for a NAIA school? Or are they even looked at?
Also, what is the oldest a player can be for the draft?

Where can i get info for the MLS Draft?

Any senior anywhere is technically eligible, so far as I know. You would get in for sure by going to the combine-Umbro college weekend...cept Umbro probably won't be sponsoring it, so it will be called something else.

As soon as some of the teams are eliminated from NCAA competition, a few of their players will declare their college careers over. There will be a full list of players who get invited or go to the colleg weekend event that takes place the two or three days before the draft. The roster is usually up a couple of weeks prior to the events.

    Diego Walsh is a senior.

Matt Crawford is a senior midfielder for UNC, not Stanford...and he should be drafted, he's a baller.

Any word on any U-17 nats who may wish to go pro? I would love to see the Fire get a shot at Grabavoy.

Any idea on what date players must declare?

Does the fact that more of our younger players are garnering interst overseas alter their decisions?

    Preston...
This seems awfully early compared to last year. Seems to me the waiver draft was right around this time, but the Superdraft was a month later. Looks like it's going to be conducted at the NSCAA convention. I'm asuming that this is due to a cancellation of the Umbro Select game.

The draft is earlier intentionally. In talking with DCUnited's staff - Ray Hudson, John Trask, Dave Kasper - they said they were frustrated by the fact that they only had 1 to 2 months to evaluate talent. This conflicted with the need to prep the team for the regular season. The extra time gives the various team 'braintrusts' that much more time to do both.

Also, in a related matter, it isn't official, but the league will likely add a player or two to the reserve squads (from 4 to possibly 5 or 6 players). The teams need that much more time to hunt out decide which players fill in those slots.

Excellent Diceson! I had heard rumors about adding a couple of spots to the rosters and speculated that they'd be developmental/P-40 spots, but wasn't sure. IMHO, this is great news. It gives young Americans more time on the field!

Look for the MetroStars to go for a Bobby Convey type. His name is Michael Bradley, 15, and he is currently in residence as a member of the U.S. under-17 national team pool in Bradenton, FL.
