Personally I can and always have done without it. But now it's the default option and I forget to change it. This might sound selfish but can't you change the default setting to 'no notification', or merely just 'subscribe to thread' option? Surely it'd be easier on the workings of BS if it wasn't sending out needless email notifications of replies.
