Well, this is going to hurt the UEFA Coefficient. All three Austrian clubs just crashed out of the Europa League and Conference League qualifying. And they did so by losing all three home matches without scoring a goal. Most notable is Rapid falling to Liechtenstein powerhouse Vaduz. The Austrian league is ranked #8 in Europe this year, but it's now left to Salzburg to rescue the ranking. Tough task... Champions League Salzburg is drawn in Group E with AC Milan, Chelsea, and Dinamo Zagreb. Quick update on the last two rounds in Europe... Salzburg is the only undefeated club in Champions League Group E, but has only one win. Currently in second place with 6 points. Milan and Zagreb have 4 points. In the Europa League Group F, all four teams sit on 5 points. Sturm is currently last on goal difference but is right in the mix. Two nice draws against Lazio in the last two rounds. Austria Wien sits in last place in Conference League Group C with one point. Two losses to runaway leader Villareal didn't help. Technically, Austria could still move into second place with wins in the final two rounds, but their form doesn't bode well. Champions League Salzburg 1 - 0 Dinamo Zagreb Dinamo Zagreb 1 - 1 Salzburg Europa League Sturm Graz 0 - 0 Lazio Lazio 2 - 2 Sturm Graz Conference League Villareal 5 - 0 Austria Wien Austria Wien 0 - 1 Villareal
Fifth matchday update... Salzburg lost at home to Chelsea and fell to third behind Milan, which got a huge win over Zagreb. Now Salzburg has to win in Milan on the final matchday. Sturm hosted Feyenoord and won 1-0 on a goal in added time. So now Sturm and Lazio lead the group with 8 points (but negative goal differences) ahead of Feyenoord and Midtiylland with 5 points. A draw at Midtiylland will be enough. Austria Wien earned a draw against Lech Poznan but sits last with 2 points and eliminated from a top-two spot. Champions League Salzburg 1 - 2 Chelsea Europa League Sturm Graz 1 - 0 Feyenoord Conference League Austria Wien 1 - 1 Lech Poznan
Salzburg lost big to Milan and finished third in Group E. Next stop, Europa League... Champions League AC Milan 4 - 0 Salzburg
And then there was one. Sturm and Austria were eliminated European competition in the group stage. Both finished last in their groups. Sturm's Europa League Group F is one of the most interesting I've ever seen. Lazio and Sturm led the group going into the final matchday with the other two clubs three points behind but boasting better goal difference and a remaining home game. As it turned out, both Midtiylland and Feyenoord won and advanced, as all four teams finished with 8 points! Unfortunately, Sturm had the worst goal difference. With a chance to overtake Hapoel Beer Sheva, Austria lost big and finished their Conference League group with no wins, two draws, and -13 goal difference. This is not Austria Wien in its prime... Europa League Midtiylland 2 - 0 Sturm Graz Conference League Hapoel Beer Sheva 4 - 0 Austria Wien
Salzburg, the last remaining Austrian club in Europe, has drawn Roma for its Europa League knockout playoff round to be held February 16 & 23. It's a tough opponent, but winnable. Would love to see Jose Mourinho knocked out of the competition...
