Who cares? Just put the a$$hole on ignore if it bugs you. Personally, I find his/her spelling and grammatical error-riddled posts a hilarious indictment of modern educational practices.
So, I saw the have time score and then the final score. Went from "No, I'm not going to watch..." to " Ok, I will watch it." I almost wish that I hadn't watched the game. For the last couple of games, we seemed to have gone to more man marking again and our defense has gone back to being an open sieve. Not sure that it's working. Oh wait, it's not. Between the officiating and our really poor closing out of the game, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. This is not a playoff team. Not when Paul Marie is one of your subs (what a stupid yellow card). Not sure how Austin didn't score in the last 15-20 minutes. JT had some amazing saves, but I need him to start catching the ball more often. He is just giving up a few too many rebounds. Nathan, Beason, Yuell, Fierro, and Remedi were crap. I don't want to hear again how many times Remedi has been fouled. Good game from Chofis, Benji, and better from Espinoza (except for this stupid yellow). I'm not worried about Cade being back next year. He will. Austin was classless. GK should have been tossed, along with a couple of others later in the game. I will give them credit for showing heart at the end.

The thing with our man-marking scheme is that other teams have figured it out. They can move a guy and pull our center backs out of position. So we saw both Beason and Alanis following their mark nearly to midfield. I’m all for marking runners in the box, but this man-to-man scheme is not working for us. Partly, we’d need a lot more team speed to pull it off. Alanis is slow, so getting him out of position means that he’s not going to recover. It’s pathetic. Marie shouldn’t have gotten that yellow card, not because it was stupid, but because he didn’t actually foul the guy. That was just a bad call. (Or am I thinking of another game?) And yes, Austin should have gotten at least one red card in the scrum following our PK. That said, I think it’s obnoxious for the scoring team to pick the ball out of the opponent’s net. I want for our guys not to do that. Still, their GK should have seen red right then, and one of their other guys ran into the mob and hit one of our guys with his forearm. He should have seen red too. — But Baldo always allows more fouling than I think is appropriate. It was an ugly game, and how did we not dominate up a man? I hear Frank saying: I didn’t have the right guys on the field. If we have eleven and they have ten, we have the right guys. I don’t think there’s any chance that we’re going to make the playoffs, but I’ve thought that since the preseason, so no change there. Go Quakesfans!! - Mark
Sorry. I watched the RSL game right after the Austin game and I think I’m confusing the two. And in the Austin game, we could have gotten more cards, but Baldo let’s way too much stuff go. (In my not so humble opinion.) In any case, we aren’t very good. And that’s the crux of the problem. Go Quakesfans!! - Mark
I know they were praising him in the broadcast. Most saves or whatever. But in this game I was not impressed.
I once saw a game with Kari Seitz as ref. She gave three red cards to the same team. They were all well earned and she had given lots of warnings to those thugs, but they kept it up. That was the ForestKiller versus I think the Silverbacks? Or maybe the FailHawks. In any case they finished out the last five minutes of the game down 3 to 1 with only eight guys on the pitch. I was in the stadium for that one, but I had recorded it too, and watching it with replays it was clear that three reds was perfectly reasonable. Austin should have picked up two red cards in the scrum after our PK. That said, I really wish that our guys would not pick the ball out of the enemy’s net following a score. Go Quakesfans!! - Mark
If Stuver got a red, then so should have Espinoza. The ball is legally the defending team's to retrieve plus he threw the player into the back of the net. I really think that is they'd give the GK a red they'd have almost had to thrown Espinoza out.
When you score a goal, the ball potentially has significance as a souvenir. No one should ever be penalized for retrieving the evidence of their goal. If soccer has a rule against it (punishable by ejection, no less), it's a silly one, in my view.
He did not "throw" him into the back of the net, he gave a little push from behind which the player then embellished by falling down. Yellow? Perhaps. Red? No way. The Austin goalie? That should have been a stone cold red for violent conduct. Toledo was a total wimp.
Back in the day, when I played ice hockey at Sharks Ice, we played one game every season at the Shark Tank. The first time I scored where Los Tiberones play, I dove headlong into the net to retrieve my souvenir (shown below) and took it to the bench before lining up at the center circle to take the face off. Everyone was laughing, including the referee. I told him, hey, it's not every day you score at the Shark Tank.
I hate picking the ball out of the back of your opponent’s net, but it is explicitly allowed. That might be just an MLS thing, or it might be more general. I was shocked to learn that a few years ago. (Probably a lot of years ago, but I like to think that I’m younger than I am.) So dick move? Yeah. And one of our guys shoved one of their guys, which could go down as a yellow at least. I’m not sure of the actual rule there, so I defer to @bsman. But you’ll recall that when Lenny headed the ball out of the LA GK’s arm (also a dick move), and the GK hit him, the GK got a red and Lenny didn’t even get a yellow. Apparently, you can be a dick and not get a yellow card. But yeah, Austin should have had at least two red cards, probably more. Go Quakesfans!! FC Broccoli can suck it!! - Mark
Interestingly, this was discussed on tonight's regional referee webinar. There is nothing in the laws that prevents a team from retrieving the ball from an opponents net. An astute referee will make sure (s)he is close enough to prevent any problems, or even retrieve the ball him/herself and give it to the team that wants to restart quickly.
I totally agree. These things were not equivalent. It's hard to tell how hard Espinoza pushed the guy, but they all went tearing full speed towards the back of the net. It's not surprising that one or more of them might lose their balance in the tussle and fall into the back of the net. But sure, maybe it's a yellow to Espinoza for the push. But there was no intent to injure - they were contesting a "resource", similar to how a guy who is guarding a ball out of bounds gets pushed down at the end line. But the Stuver thing was all out intent to deliver a physical punishment, with the full weight of his body. Straight red all the way. You can't just run up and body slam a guy in soccer. It's not hockey or football.
Interesting. I just looked before reading this and didn't find anything. It was there a few years ago for certain. Maybe it was guidance, but I even remember it being enforced. The defender had the right to the ball. If the defender wasn't going for it that was a different thing. And technically, yeah, it's the defender's ball since it's their restart.
We are not being "unbias". We are being reasonable. I know Espinoza pushed the guy. I'm fine with him getting a yellow. But guys push each other all the time in soccer. If a push was a red then there should have been about 15 reds with all the pushing that was done in the ensuing tussle. But a full on run up and body slam leading with the elbow with the intent to physically harm is a straight red. Full stop. It was completely ridiculous.
Ha! That's pretty funny. Of course we all see the games, to some extent, through Quake goggles. I'm surprised anyone would deny that. I'm not saying we're blind, but that bias certainly is there.
