So, the Australia trip will actually happen! One reason this trip is happening is because New South Wales has changed their rules for entry: if you are fully vaccinated, you do not need to complete a 14-day quarantine (still only for exemptions, not general tourism). Back in September, it was reported that the vaccination rate for the USWNT players was 80-90%, which was said by Heifetz. (I've also seen a number more recently on social media as 95%, but I'm not sure where that estimate comes from.) The percentage obviously might have changed since then, but I wouldn't be surprised if 1-2 usuals do not "make" this roster although it will likely be reported as for "personal reasons."

Additionally, players will be tested for COVID before traveling, upon arrival, and periodically throughout the trip. They'll operate within a bubble. Australia's government doesn't play around.

EDIT to add: Another reason players may be left off the roster is that these games are no longer a part of the "celebration tour." The cycle leading up to the 2023 WWC officially starts now.

The 14 day quarantine that the US did last year before the friendly in Holland might of been a good thing as the team played with a lot of chemistry(since most likely they spend all those quarantine days on the practice field)

#7 Australia has an solid starting eleven but don’t go deep after that, so look as the first game where they’ll be freshest

Don’t expect newbies till January camp, as this might be the toughest we will face for quite a while—-England & France will have their own SBC versions in Spring and they already signed up most the higher ranked teams.

Is Vlatko’s job on the line if he looses both Aussie matches? So do feel he will go with lineups he’s most familiar with—though bringing the golden oldies to sweep in later in the game worked wonders in the last Korean game

They didn't do a 14-day quarantine last year in the Netherlands. In fact, the team received an exemption from the Dutch government from doing a quarantine. They haven't done any travel in which they had to do a long quarantine since, by it's very definition, you cannot spend any quarantine days on the practice field. The team, however, has been stringent on operating within a bubble and on regular testing.

Those are quite reasonable times from an Australian point of view. They are also in the range of times we will see at the WWC in New Zealand and Australia so this is kind of a practice for fans as well as players. This kind of situation is exactly what recording devices are made for. Also ESPN archives everything they show so you can watch later. I think the same applies to the FOX networks where the archived matches are available on the FOX Sports app but I have not really the FOX Sports app much so I am a bit unsure.

I am personally unsure about what exactly I will do. Being retired I can, with relative ease, temporary alter my sleep times but I may not bother as watching delayed is fine with me. This time is only two matches but the WWC is a few more since I try to watch most every WWC match regardless of teams. Some times I skip watching some 3rd group matches because it is common for that 3rd match to be either virtually or really meaningless. See Australia vs the US at the last Olympics.

BTW: Japan and Australia are the only two non US countries I have visited that I seriously considered retiring into.

I will predict 1 or 2 newbies will be on the roster this time. Besides, Australia really isn't that good to be honest, particularly their defense. Pugh and Smith (and hopefully Purce) would tear them apart.

Who would the two newbies be? Read some of the on line sports mags, NWSL end-of-the-year all star picks; everybody voted Rodman rookie of the year, including one that had her as league’s MVP. Another picked Caprice Dydasco(Gotham/FB) as MVP even though she’s never been on the USWNT before.

So no Pugh and no Rodman. There are others from NWSL teams that are still in the playoffs so the snub is kind of inexplicable.

I just do not see why leaving off the possible NWSL Rookie of the year and Pugh is almost an obvious choice.
But Vlatko Andonovski is a great coach so his choices must be perfect.

Kinda strange not to have Pugh, but this is a pretty experimental roster. Pugh was probably left off to give chances to other players and I think she will definitely be back next year. Horan is the only attacker/midfielder on this roster with more caps than Pugh.

As for Rodman, she appears to be pretty far down the depth chart right now. However, I expect we will have some home friendlies in January/February and the camp for that will likely be much bigger than the roughly 22 person roster we are taking to Australia. Biz/1st tickets to Australia aren't cheap.

Well, people have been campaigning to give the youngsters an opportunity. This is it. Of the six forwards, we took to the Olympics, 5 are not on the roster: Lloyd (retired), Rapinoe, Heath, Morgan, and Press.

Our two fullbacks, Dunn and O'Hara, are not on the roster. Nor are Ertz and S. Mewis in the midfield.

It should be interesting. We could field a team with a starting lineup of which practically nobody was at the 2021 Olympics.

They were both called in but opted out. How about reading around a bit before making uninformed comments.

Pugh and Rodman are likely not vaccinated. Everyone going to Australia is required to be vaccinated. You don’t just decide willy nilly when you want to be on the USWNT. You take the opportunity as a youngster to make an impression over many other young talented players coming out of college that could easily take their place.

Where did you find this? The roster drop article from USSOCCER you posted doesn't reference either player.

EDIT: OK, I see you posted the tweet with this information.
In this case, though, it's unfair to call out or find fault with FanOfFutbol's comments.
Not everyone has Twitter account and he was simply going off your original post.

This assumption is a stretch. There are a ton of reasons for not joining this roster; they could have prior engagements that they couldn't get out of (eg, a wedding, etc.) or could be in need of healing from a nagging injury.

FanOfFutbol’s last sentence seems like a shot taken at Andonovski and was unnecessary without waiting for further news in my opinion.

It was pretty widely known before this that Pugh was unvaccinated and wouldn't likely be going and then in the press conference Vlatko paired them together and kept it vague while specifically mentioning others such as O'Hara, who opted out due to previous family engagement, which was quickly reported as her sister's wedding, or Sam Mewis, who he said would have been invited if she wasn't dealing with an injury.

And I think we can call out FoF for making an assumption based on their own personal bias instead of seeking out more information even if it went against their bias.

A stretch? One of those ton of reasons is they could be unvaccinated. Look at lil_one's post at the top of this thread.

There's no problem if FOF hadn't read the tweets referencing the absence of Rodman and Pugh, but I said that in the way that I said because FOF has been on the fire Vlatko, he's a horrible coach kick since the Olympics. FOF made a snide, sarcastic remark about Vlatko before even knowing the full story.
    I responded, that's all.

BTW, I don't have a Twitter account. I just lurk. Sometimes reading various tweets is the only way you can find out any USWNT or NWSL news.

got to say hats off to Vlatko for choosing so many newbies. It might be the first time ever we’ll play a team((Australia) with more experience than we got! lol

I’m super excited too. Hopefully it debunks the theory that Vlatko has no control over his roster selection that some like to spout on here with no concrete evidence to support that conspiracy.

Not that I agreed with FoF's sentiment, he's been taking shots at Vlatko for the past year; it's been his m.o. LOL!
