Or he loves football too much and cannot walk away from it, despite his reluctance to adapt or change with it, thus the modern game passed him by and the only job in football worthy of his talents is with the only other entity unwilling to change. Dark, I know.
Just heard Julien Laurens say that Rennes is making a play for Wenger to come to them as President or Sporting Director or whatever. But Julien thinks that Rennes is not a big enough draw to pry him away from his FIFA job. I'd tend to agree.
I figured that since the boss has resurfaced in a big way this week, with the launch of his new book, and his official musings at FIFA about potential rule changes, that we should dust off this old thread and let it continue to be a repository for all things Arsene, post Arsenal? Or not.
There are a lot if interviews of Arsene lately because if his new book, but here’s the best one I’ve heard so far. A great job by Alan Davies to really get him to open up in the second half, especially about players and historic games... https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-tuesday-club/id1509190548?i=1000498928980
Just catching the end of the crappy ManU-Wolves match, and they just had a promo for Men In Blazers - Arsene Wenger Special tomorrow at 5:30pm EST on NBCSN here in the States. In the promo, Wenger is asked why he so often had problems zipping up his overcoat. I know those two don't take themselves too seriously, but hopefully there are more insightful questions that are asked.
Another player Arsene almost signed as a youngster, and this one is expressing some regret. https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/i-...chiellini-reveals-regret-at-rejecting-arsenal
I was just listening to the Tuesday Club podcast and they attributed this quote to Arsene: He was a one in a million manger. We should never forget that. This quote came near the end of the pod, where thy do quizzes and this one was called "Voltaire or Wenger?". Quotes from the 2 gents and you'd have to try to differentiate them. No trivial task. I liked it a lot. So did they. And they proposed some new ones to be developed, like Alardyce or Kierkegaard, or more plausibly Mussolini or Mourinho.
Not sure where the best place to put this, but it seems more appropriate than any other. Thought this interview with Wenger about Mike Dean was interesting. I'm still scratching my head trying to make sense of that ref's litany of bad decisions against us. Clearly, Wenger is also... Arsène Wenger on referee Mike Dean saying he was the most intimidating manager in the Premier League: “Is someone behind me there?! Are you making jokes? I’m not very proud of that! He still doesn’t know why [he sent me off at Old Trafford]!” [beIN] #afc pic.twitter.com/RYTQa5M2ml— afcstuff (@afcstuff) April 6, 2022
Yeah i heard that mike dean interview on bbc. Was thinking of linking it in the other thread but then decided it wasn’t that worthy and he didn’t deserve any further attention. However I did think it was quite strange that he singled out Wenger as the most fearsome manager.
So the club plans to make a Bronze statue of Wenger for the stadium. This is an obvious decision, but choosing which image to base it on...not so clear. this Twitter thread is both enlightening and hilarious on this topic. Which iconic image of Arsène Wenger would you like to see as his statue outside the Emirates Stadium? 👀 #afc pic.twitter.com/jQutcFTDxw— afcstuff (@afcstuff) May 23, 2022
Great suggestions. Those were all included in the Twitter post, and they‘re all worthy. I thought this one in the Twitter threat was really good, too. pic.twitter.com/hRjKACowfG— Cobs (@Cobs_10) May 23, 2022
It's official. Personally I would have preferred one of the beach poses, but this will suffice. Arsène ❤️ pic.twitter.com/jExR16njb4— Arsenal (@Arsenal) July 28, 2023
I heard the statue was going to be Wenger in a puffy winter coat, but the sculptor couldn't get the zipper right.
There are so so many iconic poses, including the one at OT after he's climbed into the stands and stretching is arms out wide. But this one they've chosen is much less controversial and will do nicely. Has it been installed/unveiled already or is this a "rendering" of what it'll look like?
He’s going to be at the Monaco match as the ‘guest of honor’ or whatever. I’m sure there will be much fanfare and photo ops that day.
Yup, saw that. But I feel like with other statues (maybe Bergamp, Henry, Adams) they didn't uncover it a few days prior like this one, but rather kept it under wraps until the big hoopla, ideally with the subject present. So that's what I meant before, that Wenger perhaps gave his blessing to unveil it more low-key before the big hoopla event. For me, that would fit his modest DNA.
Well even truer to his modesty, it seems there was no hoopla unveiling event at all. At least not that I heard of. That's SO Wenger.
