Attendance is getting great, almost 33,000 watched the Galaxy-San Jose game. I really have faith in this league. I've noticing a great improvement in the past months. About 23k were at the Crew stadium and last week 24k. Kansas drew more than 19 and DC (in spite of the heavy rain) drew 17k, Dallas drew more than 17 also. Tell me how you are feeling about the game of soccer in this country. I think the playoffs will also brake records this year. Go MLS, Go MLS.
It is now official. MLS attendence has arrived. Playoff fever, big numbers across the board. Like the Strike Force ad said. . . "Mission Accomplished" Look for 17K next year with the new stadium in LA 18-20K when Chi goes back to Soldier. AND Espn 2 missed out on all of the action with Pointy Football comitments. That part of the package MUST be changed.
Yes, all of these figures from last night are encouraging. However, I was under the impression, and I may have been mistaken here, that we were below where we were last year at this time? Next weekend's attendance levels should be especially high, as well.
Once again, for the upteenth time, there will be no rapid fire increases. It will be a long, slow upward climb. IMO, if and when the league averages over 20,000 fans per game for more than one season the national media will actually start to pay real attention. And when that happens THEN you'll be able to say "Mission Accomplished".
No, the league is ahead of last year. And this will be the first time in a long time (maybe ever) that all teams average over 10,000. And comparing this year to last is sort of pointless anyway. Two fewer teams and one team that is now in a stadium with a capacity LOWER than their season average last year. If you are to be encouraged it is with attendances late in the season - especially in Columbus and Chicago - proper sized stadia that are near capacity every game right now.
This is great! I hope the MLS can keep it up as well as had some new teams. I think every team should be atleast planning a soccer specific stadium. Keep it up MLS!!!
Son, once you have been in America long enough to understand you will find out that going from last to first is a way of life. We revel in it. It's called the Band Wagon. MLS isn't quite there yet, but it is headed in that direction. When it hits, and it will, you will see attendence shoot up 50% or better over 2 years, and TV ratings that beat Hockey and start moving in on Baseball. Don't tell me it can't happen. We are the only people on earth to put human beings on the Moon. Making MLS and real football popular in the US is child's play.
We should have a very strong week next week in terms of attendance, too. DC needs to win against Dallas on Thursday night. The fact that it's a midweek game might keep the numbers down, but I expect at least a good midweek showing from United fans. I'm guessing 17,000. The Revs and Metros meet at Gillette Stadium on Fan Appreciation Night in a game where I believe either team can finish anywhere between 2nd and 9th. The rumor is that the Revs are opening up the entire lower bowl, and the crowd may swell to 30,000+. Colorado's really the only home team that doesn't have a big game. They're already in and playing Dallas in the first round, but they can wrap up home field with a win. They're also expecting a big crowd. Let's say 25,000. San Jose and LA meet at Spartan Stadium for the Supporters' Shield and home field throughout the playoffs. Think the Quakes might find a way to bang the place out? I do. Even if 30% of those in attendance are Ruiz/Galaxy fans. Call it 21,000. (I THINK that's capacity, but I'm too lazy to look it up.) And finally, Chicago hosts Columubus in a game they MUST win to get into the playoffs, no matter what happens on Saturday. I'd be surprised if it wasn't sold out. 16,000. That's an average of 21,800.
I agree with most of what you said, I think once we get a couple more SSS and the game starts looking better on TV we will start to see more games on ESPN and maybe even ABC. Once that becomes a reality I think TV rating will increase and the league's credibility. Now your comment about putting men on the moon, I have my doubts about that. Don't call me crazy, lets wait first until the Japanese satelite gets up there and starts the mapping that is supposed to be so detailed we should be able to actually see the lunar modules and equipement that were supposedly left on the Moon's surface. I for one don't think any of it is there, and this comming from a kid that grew up in the 70's, remembers seeing the final moon mission astronauts splashing down in the ocean on tv and used to dress up in a snowmobile suit and pretend he was an astronaut.
Let me try this again. You are waiting for Japanese satelites to NOT find the US left overs on the moon? Say, do you ever invest in real estate? I have some lovely ocean front property in Nevada that I can let you have for. . . 1 MILLION DOLLARS!! Just send your certified check to: I Am A Stupid Jackass Who Thinks America Did NOT Send Men To The Moon, Has NO Life, and Won't Take A Cookie and Just Go Away Fund, Bumf__k, Arizona 89998
What, the Week 26 Attendance thread is about a conspiracy theory involving fooling the world about putting a man on the moon?
I don't know what the deal was in regards to the assesment of the Galaxy's attendance last night but it must have been WAY OVER 33,000. Both sides of the rose bowl were completly sold out and half of the south end GA sections were full. There was a double header with WUSA so I don't know if maybe some people bought WUSA tickets that didnt count for the Galaxy numbers or what but it was a HUGE crowd. There were also a hell of alot of kids that might have been given free tickets, but since when is MLS into reporting lower numbers than they can claim? I don't know but it was a prommising sign of things to come.
Your description sounds very familiar. People have been saying this about the Rose Bowl all year long. Either the numbers were inflated in the past - which would make people's estimates based on previous years' figures too high - or the Galaxy is only counting tickets sold and not tickets distributed.
Yeah, I have to agree with your attendance perception last night. I was at the game and I thought there were over 43,000. But, that is only my humble point of view.
Although it hasn't happened yet, (San Jose's average is currently at 9990) when it does it will be the first time since the inaugural year that all teams have averaged more than 10k. Spartan's capacity is 31218.
Good news! But I bought the St. Petersburg Times here in Florida to read about yesterday's games and MLS is totally ignored. I'm lucky I have the internet!!!
Regardless of whether the real number was 33,000+ or more, remember this. The game played opposite a pennant race Angels game in Anaheim AND the De La Hoya v. Vargas boxing match. Given the heavy interest in boxing among Hispanic sports fans, and the SoCal connection of both the boxers, the turnout at LAG was spectacular. As to the WUSA game as a crowd draw, I was there at the start of the WUSA game. There were (maybe) 4,000 people in the stands. A lot of them were wearing LAG kits. I do not think the WUSA game provided that much of a boost to the attendence figure.
I can back up Cadaver's view of last night's Galaxy crowd. People were watching the WUSA game with mild interest, but dare I say, not a soul left after that game. Everyone poured in, and everyone already there, stayed for THE game.
Re: Re: Attendance is getting great, almost 33,000 watched the Galaxy-San Jose game Sorry, but I must call you crazy.
It was a great week attendance wise but lets keep our bobbers in the water!! When numbers like these become the norm and not the exception, then we'll have something to yell about. This was a great week in a long marathon.....It would be nice to see numbers like these for the playoff games though!!!!
Will not happen - at least not in LA. Game one on Sept. 25 is a Wednesday night game, and mid-week games are poison. Ironically, if LAG did not have home field, game two might have been a weekend and drawn a big crowd. LAG may make less money with home field and two week night games rather than one weekend game.
