First we suffer through the Kraft days were today's crowd would have been 'rounded up' to say - 13,500. Now we have a numb-nuts tallying the numbers who can't add on a few to get over the 10k phychological bar. Hell, the ref was a double agent for the Metrostars, that's good enough for 1 more. How does someone decide that reporting 9999 is the right thing to do. There's no way you can tally to 0.01% accuracy anyway. And to all the trolls: yeah, yeah, our attendance sucks - it's sad that were trying to make 10k - we should be ashamed, moved, whatever. That's not what this thread is about.
Free malt liquor night at Spartan? Hope you weren't driving then. Or else you're unfamiliar with the rules of soccer involving use of the hands.
I'm bewildered by the Quakes attendance woes. Best team in MLS the past handful of season's. The best player in MLS. I am also under the impresssion that the San Jo region is a soccer hotbed. Is it Spartan? Maybe a SSS would cure SJ att. problems. Maybe put it in Santa Clara?
Who officially counts attendance? Is it counted by numbnut Spartan employees? The powers that be at Spartan Stadium are really starting to piss me off. The food is sucking, the security is rude and intrusive, and the beer prices:what you get has become a joke! My love for this stadium is absolutely dwindling.
No we shouldn't, unless the Burn (with 6,941 tonight) should also be ashamed, moved, whatever. So they had the Southlake fiasco last season - San Jose has suffered through front-office fiascos for years (yes, even during the championship years). Yet both teams are still in their respective MLS markets and will be for years to come... and rightfully so. GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
That, and a local and/or devoted investor that'll not only keep the team's current identity, but use it and work with the established fanbase while starting to advertise/market to grab new fans. So a new SSS alone may not be a long-term attendance answer (though it alone will increase attendance in the short-term), but the combination of a new SSS and a worthy advertising/marketing effort certainly is. GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
One would think that Alexi L. would've bought a ticket so that attendance could hit five-digits. Yet another reason for a new South Bay SSS. GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Oh yeah, and if the last few years are any indication, than the second-half of the season will see higher attendances. This bodes well for this season, particularly considering that the first half of this season got a boost from Fred's visit. GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
The crowd looked pretty full tonight. I was pretty happy to see that. Kind of quiet at times, but well, by Mullan's goal, I think people started definitely looking more alive. Great results, great crowd...what more could a soccer fan want? OH YEAH, a NEW STADIUM! Okay okay, for now I'll just take the good game and attendance....
Well, for this night at least, I can confess that it was my fault that the Quakes attendance did not reach 10,000.
Buddy, you should have been there, just to make it one notch better... If it gets to be 9999 next home game, you can fault me there... I just hope that's a legit number, and not a padded stat that was conjured up from the books of Lynne Metaperel--cheers!
UGH! That stinks! We were one off?!! And to think I flew all the way from Portland and one more person couldn't have made the effort to be there?! Sheesh! There's some lazy peeps out there!
Spartan with 10K fans making soccer noise (instead of horns like at LA and DC) makes a much greater impression to the TV audience than having 15k spread all over hell and back in a large NFL/college stadium.
I could not disagree more. If anything I think that a crowd of 9,999 shows that the Quakes accurately reflect their attendance and do not bump it up becuase oviously if they did they would have gone over 10,000. It could be worse, LA claimed to have 23,500+, if anyone saw that game on ESPN they would have seen thousands of empty seats. While I agree that our attendance is still a joke that last thing I think this F.O. does is pad attenance. Most times it seems as if they are under announcing!!!
From your post to God's and the County Supervisors' ears, 'shower! Believe me, we're trying REALLY hard on that one.
I feel like trolling, but the educator in me has to go w/ the Truth... I was at the LA game, and as I stated elsewhere, if a friend of mine wasn't moving out of the country this weekend and would've been able to pick me up at SJ airport, I prolly would've done 2 MLS games in the same day! But the upper deck at LA was empty. The shaded side was full, but that wasn't visible from the t.v. camaras. Also, as the day progressed and the shade dropped down over the lower bowl, the expensive seats started filling up. Outside, there were scalpers selling $35 seats for $10!! The General Admission section was empty. I just don't see how they could justify 23K. It was absolutely padded. I was at a game last year where there were 18K (vs. Colorado the week b4 Fathers Day). That game had more ppl in the stands than this game.
Well, it wasn't that Ultras guy they escorted out after 30 seconds. Sounds like they counted his ticket. Seriously, I think this is the best evidence we have that the attendance isn't inflated. Won't add a single person to break 10,000. Lynne Meterparel would have turned last night's attendance into more than 15,000.
I was surprised to see so many people there. It definitely looked like more than at the last Metros game. I thought with the week's worth of articles about MLS teams losing player for national team duty, lots of people wouldn't come because the Metros were short 6 of their best players, and the Earthquakes would be without Landon Donovan and other key players. Maybe people came expecting a repeat of the last game against the Metros. At least they got four goals, still pretty good. BTW, you can call me Burrito Boy, because the Quakes are 3-for-3 on winning burritos for the fans at Spartan with me in attendance!
I love those burritos. Now if they had a baja fresh in the east side i would be in heaven. Anyways, some kids who sat behind me were looking for donovan, through out the game i heard them saying HE'S THERE! or He's on the bench. I was laughing inside at them.
I don't think they're under-reporting attendance, but if they are, I can only think of one reason why they might want to do that, and it's not a happy thought.
It doesn't have to be THAT reason...They may simply be trying to build a case for the city/county/whatever that their attendance is not what it should be and that part of the blame is that Spartan is not an ideal place to play.
