Athletic Bilbao will be going to Holland for their pre-season training after playing a friendly in Tafalla against Peña Sport (30/7). Matches have been arranged in Holland against Groningen and Heerenveen on 5/8 and 7/8 respectively, and they will then return to Spain to play Numancia and Racing away on 11/8 and 14/8. In addition, Athletic will have its Traditional summer "Homenaje al socio" (tribute to the supporters) match on August 21, with Olympiakos of Greece providing the opposition.

How fashionable are we , we have greeks coming to play us. Perhaps we have them to congratulate them for beating Spain? :D

re: the 21/8 "homenaje al socio" match with olympiakos:

    (1) what kind of attendance would you expect at san mames?

    (2) briefly, what is the significance and history of this fixture?

thank you for your time and comments.

1.You can expext a large attendance as Athletic usually if not always sells out

    2. This fixture is part of Bilbao's version of the festival de SanFermin(pamplonas), so the match is part of a major week in bilbao.

    thanks bilbao2brooklyn.

aste nagusia - i did some reading on it - very interesting.

im looking forward to this match with athletic.

i see athletic as a special club, with a unique and fascinating history, and i think there is a rich significance in any visit to san mames - regardless of the nature of the fixture - that is, friendly match or not.

    Thanks for the kind words.

You are correct, San Mames, "La Catedral", is a religious experience.
