According to ESPN and Ives, Aston Villa are taking their stab at Brad Guzan as well. Celtic have been the frontrunners, but their transfer fee was just about half of this $4 million amount from Villa.

How will this play out? Bidding war? Personally, I would rather see Guzan play at Villa Park than the SPL, especially because Celtic have a goalkeeper that the fans adore currently, and I want Guzan ready for 2010.

What do you people think? He is an amazing keeper, and must have made noise last week against Sweden. It's like a loud auction right now.

    What do you say people?

    Perfect fit is my opinion.

Understudy to an on-loan keeper for rest of season, provides opportunity to earn playing time next season.

In a superior league to the SPL.

    I hope it works out.

Agreed. Better at Villa, where he will be the starting keeper next season. He wouldnt start over Boruc, and would only get a chance if Boruc left Celtic (which supposedly he is).

I have to agree, I think the Villa option is much better for Brad. And obviously, for double the money, it's better for MLS and the Goats.

I wonder, who dissagrees with us on this, because I am sure we won't be the lone voices on this issue.

I agree, i would really like to see him at Villa, Boruc has #1 spot sealed for a while at Celtic, not to mention he'll have Carling Cup and FA Cup games to get some playing time, as well as challenging for a few premier league games(IF Villa ended up buying Carson from Liverpool). Villa seem like a team on the up, full of some great young talent, with a good manager, sounds like a nice potential fit.

As a Villa fan I would love to have an American at VP.

But like I said in the Aston Villa thread I think it's rather dangerous to bleed such a young keeper in the EPL. Guzan's toughest games have probably been the 4 caps he had.

He's a good keeper but I'd hate for him to cost us a Euro spot!

What do you mean "cost us a Euro spot!"? Not sure I know what you mean, but I will say I think Guzan is the real deal, and would handle EPL challenge very well.

Well the race for 6th is very tight at the moment. Villa need good results and say if Carson gets injured and Guzan is put in his place on April 26 against Everton and he makes a young keeper mistake and Villa drop points...

I think that maybe though that problem might be avoided if Carson is unavailable MON will probably use Taylor.

So you mean that if Guzan blows a game for Villa, that they will drop a place in EPL standings, right?

Don't foresee it being a problem, he is a great keeper!

No doubt he is a great keeper for MLS and one of the best still in North America.

But this is hostile EPL, where Robinson, David James, Cerny, Kiraly, Howard, and even Jens Lehmann have made errors.

6th? You mean the race for the last champions spot is tight. Liverpool may have a game at hand or two depending on who you are but they're certainly going to drop some points. Everton, Man City and Villa all have a legitimate shot at playing champions league footie. EPL is really exciting this year as far as results are concerned.

But I'm with the other posters that would rather him play for Villa. Best league in the world right now in my opinion. Much better than going to Fulham...however he may be used to that considering he played for Chivas during their "growing" years.

That's a fair point. After all, as good as Howard is now for Everton he went through some real periods of inconsistency for Man U and needed time to settle in. I think we all should be patient with Brad in a top league like the EPL and not expect too much too soon.

I guess that is one argument why playing in the SPL would be preferable and I can see that too.

But if he's going to be on the bench regardless, I think I'd prefer him at Villa.

The only upside to Celtic is CL exposure.

He's developed into a remarkable keeper, but his toughest games are behind him. That Chivas USA defense in his rookie year was the worst in the world. He will never have tougher games than when he was allowing hat tricks to Nate Jaqua...

Well good point but right now Villa have a young CB in Curtis Davies.

Mellberg is off to Juventus and we currently have no established RB.

I think he meant at a Consistant basis. Celtic is always in the CL fold.

Well in the group stages at least. :D

Seriously he will get more week in week out in the EPL than SPL and the occaisonal CL games.

true dat, I'm not sure how much he'll learn sitting on the bench. You can only watch so much. Playing time is what will make him better.

He's an awefully young keeper, still.

This is fairly high-profile considering where Villa is at and especially where they're going. This isn't another Nat rotting at Fulham or Derby.

Because its a really popular site and would provide some exposure for US soccer.
