Has anyone heard any rumors, or anything concrete, about the team acquiring one or more assistant coaches?
Chugger on Board? Buried at the bottom of the ‘Soccer Roundup’ section of today’s Union-Tribune was this paragraph: *** Adair joins Spirit Staff Local soccer star Chugger Adair has joined the San Diego Spirit staff as an assistant coach, according to a WUSA source. Adair played for USD, the indoor Sockers and the outdoor San Diego Flash. *** After reading this, I checked the Spirit site, and his name is listed as Asst. Coach in the FAQs section, under the question ‘Who works in the Spirit Front Office.’ http://www.sandiegospirit.com/faqs/ He is also listed as an assistant coach at Pacific University. http://goboxers.pacificu.edu/mso/msostaff.htm I assume that Tom Tate was instrumental in getting Adair an interview for the job, as both have been assistants at USD.
Great hire! Chugger is a local boy out of Hilltop HS in Chula Vista, went to USD and then on to the pros. He is the consumate pro, who has had to work hard every step of the way, and hopefully he can teach our forwards to finish. As a player, he was never the prototypical "big man" up front. He was a skillful forward who could run at defenses, was a bit of a penalty box poacher, and at his height (6'4"?) was was dominant in the air. He always seemed to know where to go without the ball, and he was very unselfish. What's more is the way he conducted himself off the field, and that influence will be invaluable to our young professional players. Kudos to the Spirit for this inspired hire.
