Unfortunately I can confirm it's true and especially during 2011-2013 it was at its worst. However, as far as I know people became aware of it and they slowly stopped using overaged players. The last youth teams were clean (U17 and U20) and the results clearly show it. Hopefully no more cheating at all.

As Thailand's region rival, this news caused quite a headline in our local sport news too. Most of the comments are about his salary lol
The whole South-East region will be interesting to watch in the next four years. Thailand has now a really good coach after Senamuang's departure, Malaysia might rise again, same for Indonesia, Vietnam have a golden generation and even Cambodia might be rising.
Honestly no. I don't see them in the 24 teams which could play AC 2023, but they'll surely get closer, especially Indonesia.
Indonesia was qualifying to the Asian Cup regularly from 1996 to 2007 (when the competition was formed by 12 and then 16 teams), they were more consistent in this regard than the whole South East Asian teams. Yes, they regressed lately, but FIFA’s ban played a part. While Malaysia do not have the same status as Indonesia, but both are miles better than SE Asian minnows like Cambodia and Laos. You are speaking about Indonesia and Malaysia as if they are East Timor or Brunei, which I completely cannot understand, unless you are not well informed about SE Asian football.
Nguyen Cong Phuong, the "vietnamese Messi" (decidedly, Messi is served up in every possible sauce lol) could join St-Truiden. https://www.walfoot.be/news/2019-06-30/cong-phuong-nguyen-le-messi-vietnamien-proche-de-saint-trond
Well yeah, 1 or 2 memorable match, but what else? Their deeply corrupt league and association certainly doesn't have a proper knack to guide their football development to the right path nor have a sustainable plan to maintain that 1 or 2 memorable performance in the regular basis. Vietnam, Thailand, and even Myanmar maybe even better than them in these regards. Talent pool is another thing though. That's why Indonesia or Malaysia to lesser degree has been able to create some sparks, but couldn't materialize to a proper fire.
Chanathip must be crying at Sapporo. Not sure he couldn't beat the challenge though. He's good, but his skill alone won't keep up with european standard if he doesn't improve at other aspects as a player.

Speaking about labelling every new talent as the “New-Messi”, or the “Japanese-Messi”, it is worthwhile to mention that somebody in the Italian Media got creative and describe Keito Nakamura as “The Japanese Robben”.
Talking about going over the top, I would take my turn to label Keito Nakamura “The Japanese CR7”, it suits him better.
I think his style of play is more like CR7 too actually. He come in from the wings to finish chances and like CR7, he have a tendency to be selfish at times but of course he is nowhere near CR7 tho.
