I heard that the radical feminists dropped the Title IX bomb on Middle Obscure State University, so they cut their men's soccer program!* *not to be taken seriously, and a reference to another, ridiculously long thread elsewhere
Excellent article, plus he mentioned my beloved Barra too. RFK does have a nice soccer history in addition to its Redskins service. I have always liked the place myself, the DC stadium authority are a bunch of greedy, incompetent weasels though.
Yeah, but when are we getting Thor Lee in his rightful place in the Ring of Honor? or are they waiting for Etch to retire so he can be first?
Baseball history at RFK... Frank Howard hits a 500 foot home run. That's about it all that's worth mentioning, if you're a baseball fan. Cheapskate Bob Short bought purchased the team for the whole point of moving it or selling it.
nice piece, does usa today regularly cover soccer? i have to say i only read it in airports. You might also mention hosting MLS Cup US 1-0 over argentina the best all star game in MLS history (and worst weather) the dude coming out of the stands after the ref some years back and even some infamous moments: the honduras qualifier the agoos back pass against the boyz the guy missing the sitter during MLS all star game weather break
Great article Beau! Thanks for the link Bryan! ps-USAToday used to cover MLS much more regularly during 1996-2000, but it has decreased coverage over the last three years.
Covering a couple of questions: - Online only. These days, they barely have space in the paper for anything (though you do get scores and standings, at least), and they're generally not going to run an opinion piece like that. The Diallo/Revolution story currently up on the site was in the paper, as were the feature on Ramos/Berhalter/Reyna's high school and the Joe Cannon piece. - Andy, why are you following Middle Obscure State University when you have the mighty Duke football juggernaut in the same town? (I was there during the Spurrier years!) - I've blocked the Agoos back pass from my memory. - Women's rugby is a club sport at pretty much any university, especially the University of North Carolina, the pre-eminent women's rugby school in the nation. (There, my wife will like that.)
Good piece of sports journalism, Beau. Nice to see a sports columnist who's passionate about footie -- nice change from reading Will, Boswell, and Deford babble on incessantly about the glory that is baseball. Your "Not in our house" theme resonates with me all the way. As for soccer memories at RFK: 1) MLS Cup 97 2) 1998 & 1999 MLS East finals, games 1 and 3 (all won by DCU of course) 3) DC vs. Chicago 2000 (Moreno and Olsen's extra-time heroics in a freezing rain) 4) 1998 Interamerican Cup game 1 -- DC vs. Vasco 5) The DC vs. Central America all-stars game a few weeks later for Central American earthquake relief
I'll never forget this game. From then on I knew Olsen would be my favorite player as long as he's able to suit up for any team. Also taught me never to give up either. From the MLS Website Talk about heart! 67%??? See in those games when we used to dominate, we'd find ways to win. Bring him back for Saturday's game, according to the MLS match report Bob Bradley talked about how he was biased towards DC! Remember when we used to draw those numbers on crappy days? We'll be lucky to get above that tomorrow.
