Admittedly I know nothing about how the Emirates Cup works. Why did the Red Bulls win the cup with a 1-1 draw today? I thought there would be extra time for a final.

The intent of his comments was to denigrate Arsenal and their inability to walk over their opponents.

No, I get it. But in either case it doesn't mean it's not taking a dump on both teams.

4 Teams play 2 games each.

RBNY Beat PSG and tied Arsenal for 4 pts
PSG Lost to RBNY and beat Boca for 3 pts
Arsenal Tied Boca and RBNY for 2 pts
Boca Tied Arsenal and lost to PSG for 1 pt

    hence RBNY wins the cup.

No, I get it. But in either case it doesn't mean it's not taking a dump on both teams. If I said "My friend is so ugly he couldn't score with M's sister" ... well it would it not be insulting to both?

Ah thanks. My next question is, why don't they have a true round robin? They should fix that.

Many pre-season cup competitions in Europe don't do that. The Dublin Super Cup this past weekend was the same way.

Pleasantly surprised by the comments--no one's slagging on MLS or the Red Bulls.

I still don't understand what the announcers were doing though. Isn't their goal to sell the match? Try to get the audience actually interested?

Instead he kept putting down the match as much as he was the Red Bulls. Compared to these clowns, Ian Darke is a pure announcing genius. Every time I see a match he is doing, I am interested. He tells the interesting storylines from the games and gets people excited about what they are watching.

I would have thought their goal was to give an honest assessment of what they saw. Why on earth would they want to "sell" a pre-season kickabout?

    I still like him.

(Of course the first EPL team I followed was his Leicester City side, then after they were relegated I became a Rovers fan and he played for them as well :D)

Because people are watching, and they need to give them a reason to stay tuned?

"This might be a pre-season matchup, but isn't it interesting that..."

    That kind of stuff.

Oh I don't know, so they keep eyeballs on the moving picture tube? Nobody has any illusions that this Cup is FA or even Carling, but if the announcers are going to continually deride it what's the point?

Why is everyone in this thread talking about Robbie Savage, describing the commentator as Welsh, etc.? The color guy was Craig Burley, and he's Scottish. He's the one who was slagging the Red Bulls and MLS.

Ooh! Burn!....One player that I thought could have made a big difference in this match for NYRB was Joel Lindpere, but I guess he was rested after his great performance on Saturday vs. PSG.

    Winning phony baloney cups?

    Been there, done that.

How seriously is anyone supposed to take a competition in which a player wants to switch to his former team for the last couple minutes of the match and the coach of the former team tries to make it happen as well?

I know, I know. It's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much more prestigious than the US Open Cup. The only thing that was missing was a player's stripping off his shirt after a goal to reveal a sports bra.

I'm pretty sure it was Burley calling out Savage on calling the Red Bulls a "pub team". He even asked Savage to clarifiy his statements after the goal was scored. Savage grudgingly said they were "League One" in quality after-all.
