snow and/or hail in Berlin. Know Arguez yet-60th minute, but Frankfurt's new signing, Martin Fenin (CZ) with two goals.
On for #44 Gojko Kacar. I'm watching a Chinese TV feed; commentators had little to say about Arguez other than that he was a very young player just signed from DC United.
I know I'm gonna get some grief for saying this, but how in the world can this guy play in the Bundesliga yet not get any PT for DCU?
First Bundesliga touches for Bryan Arguez, playing as a d-mid: dribbles forward, splits two men with a pass, recipient can't quite hold it but Hertha able to keep possession. The player Arguez came on for is listed as a defender; Hertha seems to be playing 3 at the back now. I tuned in barely a minute before Arguez was subbed in, so I don't know what their formation was before.
The bundesliga.de ticker had Kacar as a D-mid and had the team in a 4-4-1-1 at the start of the game.
Arguez error (didn't check to the ball, got beaten to it by a man coming from behind him) leads to an Eintracht Frankfurt counter, but nothing comes of it. Otherwise, he's looked pretty comfortable in possession, distributing the ball pretty well.
This is more than just a token appearance. This is an important match the second half of the campaign and they are down 2-0 when he's inserted in the match for the last half hour. He just turned 19. Kid has a bright future. I'm very excited by this. Moreso than some of the other young Yanks who have gone overseas as he is clearly in the cards as a first team player.
I've seen him win the ball well a couple times but also give the ball up cheaply a couple times as well. At least that's what I think I've seen but my feed is too choppy to be sure.
Arguez not getting forward much, pretty much being a destroyer and distributing the ball. Not all his fault, he's making himself available for outlet passes. Chinese commentators wondering why Hertha seems so reluctant to throw men forward.
And just as I post that, Eintracht #17 scores on a 4v3 counterattack. FT 0-3 moments after the restart.
Well I don't think it's been a particularly good debut but he's only 19. This is his first professional game isn't it? He'll keep improving.
In MLS, young skilled Americans are not really valued. They get beat up physically and we do not play a style that compliments them. DC plays that style but they want ready to go guys with our limited roster and resources in those key spots. Euro clubs also are much more willing to throw promising players into the mix in matches that matter, to see how they do. We have that coddle, bring along slow mentality here in the US that permeates all sport for the most part. Only the super youngsters get time. The above average and down are told to wait their turn, take their time, be patient, we don't want to mess with your mind, coddle, etc, etc... I suspect that if he shows he belongs he stays. If he shows he is to raw in a few matches they will play him in the reserves and try to improve him for year end or next year. As I posted in another thread, for a league that had so many low impact matches, like MLS, I was always amazed how more young guys didn't get exteneded run outs, even on terrible teams, or teams on bad losing streaks. Just throw another physically mature, limited player out there. Sigh.
Arguez wins the ball in midfield, loses the ball, Frankfurt score from the resulting counterattack. Showed good reactions to get the ball, but then dwelled on it far too long and was muscled off of it by two Frankfurt players.
Arguez had the ball stolen from him to setup the counter. To be fair, he stepped in nicely to take the ball in the first place. Then had multiple men on him and went down, no call was made. And to answer a previous poster... Yes, he is eligible for the next U-20 World Cup. He is a November 1989, so he's barely 18 years old. Remember, as a a 17 year old he made the U-20 World Cup team. Same age as Altidore people.
This isn't the thread to discuss this in, but I think that American players/MLS really caught a perfect storm this season. Beckham (and Blanco?) brought the attention, the DPs and other good signings brought higher quality, and now the really low American dollar is allowing foreign teams to get Americans on the cheap. So at least for this season, MLS is pretty close in quality to some lower teams and leagues in Europe (I'm not saying the Bundesliga is a lower league).
Well Goff described his performances on the practice field and in reserve games as undistinguished. That probably had something to do with it. But to his credit he got an opportunity with Hertha and took advantage of it. He's also eligible for the next U-20 cycle.
Yep that was him. He gave the ball away a few times and generally looked like a 19 year old making his professional debut in the Bundesliga. That was a good opportunity for him to get the butterflies out and I'm sure he'll improve as he gets comfortable.
That sucks.. I hope he had some positives to take away in his first Bundesliga match for the sake of his confidence. I certainly want him to be a regular off the bench for Hertha.
