Most great attacking players that emerged since around 2006 and onward usually still banging goals in their 30s. Messi, Suarez, Lewa, ADM, Benzema, Muller, CR, Aguero (before retire), Neymar (before his antics takes over), Giroud etc. Otamendi didnt improve much in his 30s, he's just happened to play in much better Argentina team managed by great manager. Otamendi did well in CA 2015 and 2016 under Tata. We didnt conceided any in those two CA finals either , we just couldnt score. As for WC 2018, the whole team was a mess.
A few of those are actually 9's though and the majority of them are all timers. Neymar fell off way quicker than he should have but he's an outlier and a typical Brazilian partier. You can get by being a CB or in the midfield as opposed to being asked to score goals. Suarez was ran out of town at Barca he was fat and slow and his CL record was abysmal. Martinez could be still good at 33 and contribute, its just way to easy for the NT to produce great 9's He will have to be in great shape to beat out Sarco, Martis, or Roberto. These guys are going to come in HUNGRY.
I always have high hope for any Argentina youngster but remember we didnt win anything at senior level despite having super talented youth players back then such as Saviola, Tevez, Lavezzi and Aguero. Do you actually rates the current youth forwards at same level as those guys? I don't, but can they improve and reach that level? hopefully so. We all have our criticism toward Lautaro, who at one point failed to score for like 15 months in N, but at 28, he's already 4th in Argentina top scorer list. Notice that Julian also failed to score in many matches at one point, but he's one of those who rarely gets criticized perhaps because of his workrate. In recent years, Lautaro proof to be better as a sub when playing in NT, so assuming he continues to do well at club level, I could see him in 2030 as a sub.
Coaching was a big part of lot of years of failure Especially Messi years. With Scaloni in charge Argentina would have 2 more copas at least probably another WC to boot. I like Lautaro I wouldnt be up in arms if he continued to play a part for the NT. I just take it for granted that Argentina do produce another elite 9 at some point in the near future.
Damn, where did this kid come from? He’s like the Argentinian version of Ekitike. Very refreshing player
The truth is Argentina rarely produce a great real #9 since Crespo. Its always been small creative forwards who likes to drop deeper & take on defenders or play as second forward like Saviola, Tevez , Kun, Dybala and now Lautaro & Julian. There's D.Milito who never really flourish in NT , the same with J. Cruz. Icardi suppose to replace Pipita , he's a proper #9 like Crespo and Bati, but too much personal drama. However, Scaloni never seems to care about having a #9. He'd rather pick someone like J.Correa, A Correa, Giu & Nico Gonzales.
Panichelli would be fighting Lopez for that other nine spot. He seems to have found his groove. Barco will never be a left back despite the attempted conversion. Left wing for him where he'd be fighting Garnacho for that spot after the Mundial. If we need two wingers then it's those two currently plus Ben Dominguez and Soule undisputedly on the right. The fact two of them could also play in midfield is perfect for any tactically flexible manager instructing his wingers to come inside and the forwards to come out wide to drag their markers out of position. Argentina has the best midfield cohort in the world and their best since the 1930s. Getting into the squad in that area will be incredibly hard but what a joy for a manager. Normally you take off a couple of midfielders and get lesser replacements but with us it will be the same consistent level of quality. Take off Paz bring on Franco for example. The centreback depth going forward is incredible too. We should be stocked for nines and wingers. So as usual it boils down to finding those fullbacks and keepers. A replacement for Tag for instance. Soler and Acuna who has grown have certainly developed a lot more physical strength but Soler has to leave Muff. It's crucial for his development. Giay looks the best candidate down the right. Players like Simon Escobar are still far too young. Beyond that you have Bruno Cabral and de Martis up front, Tulian in midfield and Thiago Veron and several others. Mattar is a physical beast at his age as well as being very decent on the ball and might also mean we should do a lot better than usual at the u17 Mundial.
On the day of the World Cup draw on Dec. 5, it'll be confirmed the size of the WC squad (previous WC was 26 players) With the current edition having 1 more game, I wouldn't be surprised if the squad size increases to 28 players. A profile like Panichelli and a profile like Soule will be incredible addition to the squad (can't believe we are even having conversation of Soule), but knowing Scaloni, he will pick 1 random and 1 GK to fulfill the 28 players lol
La p$ta madre, I was offline for a bit and came here this morning ready to drop Joaquín Panichelli’s name thinking I’d sound like some kind of hidden scout, but everyone already beat me to it, Anyway, not breaking any news but the fight for that third striker/centrodelantero spot (whatever we’re calling it now) obviously starts behind Julián and Lautaro, who for me are the best 1–2 punch any national team has right now. But if I had to rank the options, I’d go like this: 3) Matías Soulé 4) El Flaco López 5) Joaquín Panichelli (todavía sin convocatoria) 6) Taty Castellanos 7) Mateo Pellegrino For me, Soulé is the most talented guy we’re not using yet. And its getting weird, and I never want to say something negative about our savior Scaloni. But out of all of the choices, Soule is the one who gives Scaloni the most options; Soulécan play wide, drift inside, combine, whatever. And you know Scaloni loves wingers he can move around. Honestly, I think Soulé is already better than Simeone, but after what Giuliano did against Brazil, he’s earned a few more games by default, maybe? But if Soulé gets called more as a winger-attacking midfielder spot, then one of the others sneaks in as the third ‘9’. And Panichelli, man... those videos are fuego. There’s something there for sure. Panichelli and Pellegrino both bring a height and aerial threat that we’re missing. Our best options for a header from a corner shouldn't be Otamendi or Cuti!!! I would love to have a guy like Panichelli or Pellegrino on the bench; someone you can throw on in the 80th to break up a packed defense or win a couple of headers. Its about matchups, and with either of these guys we can create different matchups. This is obvious and I expect that we will see one of them wearing the Albiceleste colors in the next callups.
Today’s example against Palace is that what worries me when it comes to Senesi. He has that Otamendi weakness. It’s too much of a glaring issue. Now, he was very lucky only receive a yellow card. Edited: same thing happened again where he got outpaced by Sarr.
Respectfully Disagree Yellow card was the right decision, there was no luck played into it. Sarr was going away from the goal and there was another defender to cover. You can even argue that Sarr should get a yellow for diving. Senesi is one of the reasons why Brounemouth are high up in the Premier League table.
He is decent, but not good enough for the NT. Might as well use Otamendi then. Both have glaring issues.
Senesi is definitely good enough for the NT. The eye test and stats on his defensive actions in the Premier League show otherwise, not to mention his forward passes. If you are basing Senesi's game on the game vs Venezuela then I would say give him time. It's his first game in 3 years with the national team.
One thing about Colo is that he is fearless. This is something you need as a footballer, which many players lack. He has a strong character and he could potentially bring a lot to the plate. He plays with an edge and I wouldn't mind seeing Scaloni give him a call in the November friendlies. Speaking of friendlies. There was a rumor coming out that the AFA asked for 10 million dollars for the match v Morocco... Not sure how true it is but I would not be surprised. I don't get why Scaloni does not make a push for tougher games.... Maybe (As others have pointed out), he does not want to give away too much but, it would be nice to play a decent opponent every now and then.
The other day I saw a list of Argentina’s last 14 friendlies and dear lord is it an overload of falopa:
I refuse to believe that Equi won't make the WC, a complete midfielder. Has to be a starting midfielder for the national team alongside Enzo and MacAllister. Can't wait to see how Equi does vs PSG.
Not the best game from our boy Gomez. Anselmino is back although didnt make the match squad today but he will next game.
Inter and Roma are about to battle. Soulé and Dybala both start for Roma and Lautaro starts for Inter. Let’s see how Soulé and Dybala do in the starting line-up.
Equi would be such a great player to make the step up in the next 6 months and cement his spot. We need 3-4 youngsters to step up by July! Remember that Mac, Enzo, Julián were very marginal when the tournament started.
Didn't see much to be impressed from the video. Apparently his game is more conservative, straightforward than it used to be.
Who gives a carajo about a third #9? We need laterales, a central defender, another mid, and a good true wide player. Freaking plebs always concerned about goal scorers.
Pekerman was ready. He did fine except, as usual, overvaluing experience which preempted him from playing Messi.
