As per the Athletic, Arena has been suspended for an indefinite amount of time by MLS due to "insensitive and inappropriate remarks." Technical director Curt Onalfo and assistant coach Richie Williams are in charge for the interim.
Should we speculate? It came from the league. Could it have been something he said to a game official? Player/media member issue - you handle it in house I would think.
Technically suspended by the team, as per this, due to a MLS investigation. But there must be enough there for the Revs to put him on leave.
Generally, these sorts of statements from sports leagues have been in connection with abusive language or incidents of a sexist or racist nature. It reminds me a bit of the Ime Udoka initial announcement that the Celts made, but even more vague. There’s no reason to think that’s what’s happened here, and there’s nothing to hint at particulars. But it’s that kind of statement that suggests to me an issue that could trigger fear of civil litigation at least.
He made comments about foreign-trained players on the USMNT nearly a decade ago, but I haven't heard anything negative about him since then.
"Insensitive and inappropriate remarks" is an extremely wide range of potential scenarios. Someone on Twitter posted something about him making a sexist comment to a female intern, but who knows if there is any truth to that. It is all speculation at this point, but between Petro supposedly being ticked off about the transfer rumors and Bruce being shelved at least for a bit, this isn't really the greatest way to get things moving in the right direction for the rest of the season.
I saw that tweet too, and it's by someone with less than a dozen followers IIRC. I wouldn't pay attention to someone like that personally.
I think we'll be in good hands for now, with Onalfo and Williams - as long as they organize the responsibilities and communicate it to the players. Arena's built a strong organization.
He has, so it would be a shame if this is a big deal. This organization seems to finally be headed in the right direction both on and off the pitch.
Yup, tough break for the team. We've been doing so well we can't implode due to off field turmoil!!!!
So sick of this woke BS in MLS. Let them play football and leave the politics out of it. Coaches were much worse back in the day. Nobody suspended them for it. Unreal!
Bruce has never been shy about speaking his mind and certainly doesn't care if people think he's an a-hole. So I can certainly see him ripping into someone in charge of VAR after the first Red Bulls game, when we lost on an absolutely useless, pointless call where even the Red Bulls didn't argue. If he ripped someone a new one and used "inappropriate" or "abusive" language, I can't say I'd be shocked. But it wouldn't necessarily be something suspension-worthy unless he totally lost it. If the person he berated was female, does that make it a "sexist" comment? It shouldn't make a difference unless there was some kind of comment having to do with gender. Those of us who remember Edwin Gorter felt that it wasn't a big deal for him to get into an argument with a teammate, but when he called him a "Black xxxx" instead of just an "xxxx" that crossed the line.
I think this is really bad news and I wouldn't be surprised if Bruce's time with the Revs is done. These things never end well once they have escalated to this level. Just when things were coming together so we'll.
let's see here. workplace misconduct means not about off duty comments. administrative leave suggests paid, desk leave. insensitive and inappropriate probably means something that could be taken as a slur against a minority group, eg, LGBTQ, women, racial minorities. it generally sounds like a company hoping not to hear from the EEOC. they are in leagues cup and normal league play doesn't restart until 8/20. that's what he's on leave from.
I can't stop laughing at how stupid this comment it. "Back in the day".... thankfully reality has moved on from that.
Imagine a mind that openly mocks the concept of woke and rejects the proposition of justice. Are you really in that despicable condition? Having trouble understanding you.
My hope is that this is a case of a 71-year Even if the outcome is in his favor, I can see him deciding that he's 71 and doesn't really need to deal with this stuff.
One of the conversations that's taken place at the tailgate was ... when does he quit doing this? Those of us in the conversation all agreed that he has 1-2 years left as coach? If we win the Cup this year (hahahahahahahah), I think he moves on. If we don't, next year is his last. But we also all agreed that he's not leaving the club, just moving on from Coach and keeping the top position.
The risk is that this whole program falls apart if he goes. I'm not sure what happened in LA but I do recall that after Bruce left, Onalfo took over the team and it cratered shortly thereafter. Bruce gets MLS and his moves to build/rebuild the club have been successful so you'd like that to continue - even if he 'heads upstairs' and stops coaching. This club has seen so much front office incompetence over the years that I'd hate to go back to that.
