Arena on Freddy Adu: "He's still 14 years old. As national team manager, I'd love to have 20 potential Freddy Adus at 14, hoping that one of them eventually surfaces into a great player. I think the hype is a little overdone at this point. We hope that he continues to develop as a player and eventually plays with our senior team. He's a good player, but we need to be patient and watch him develop and give him the room to develop both on and off the field." ... Donovan, 21, also has seen Adu play. "I think he's a great player at that age, certainly the best I've ever seen at that age. I certainly wasn't very good at 14. I may not be that good now."

please tell me that Landon was joking. Our hope for the 2006 World Cup should not be saying that he might not be as good as a 14 year old.

He's obviousy kidding. When I first read it, I knew he was joking; what's he going to say, Nyaa,Nyaa, I'm better than him. Course, then you read about it on MLSnet.com and they're actually printing the Landon said Adu is better than him - as if he were serious!

I actually think this is the perfect combination. The older _player_ giving him encouragement and praise, but the manager downplaying the praise and setting up challenges.

Exactly the way it should be done.
