There were a few times last season when it seemed like Holding was playing well and Luiz could use a rest, but Arteta would pick Luiz again and again until he broke down again.

Holding was all set for a Newcastle loan last summer but it was called off when Luiz hurt his neck. Arteta wanted to give Mustafi a new contract and Luiz a new contract.

I get the feeling Arteta likes Holding as a person/leader but doesn't fancy him as a player. Despite the contract extension, it wouldn't shock me to see him sold. That could explain why a homegrown player is needed to replace him.

Agree that White is being bought to start. But Gabriel had an up and down season, maybe Saliba can back up White on the right and challenge Gabriel on the left.

 

Marí isn’t worth any money. I’d be stunned if we get what little we paid for him.

 

the bulk of the "good" personnel decisions were forced on arteta.

holding was set to go out on loan until injuries.

he would have given luiz a new contract.

smith-rowe was given a chance because nobody else was available.

just would not play pepe until he had no choice.

holding is arteta's version of giroud with wenger. he keeps wanting to replace him but, then, is forced to use him because of injuries and performances then ride him until he tires and makes a mistake where holding/giroud goes into the doghouse. again.

i can only assume the mustafi and luiz contract were finally given some supervisions after the shenanigans that was the willian contract.

 

Sell Mavropanos for 7m
Sell Holding for 23m (valued at 16 on transfermarkt)
Sell Mari for 10m

Buy White for a net of 5-10m.

Play Gabriel, White and Saliba most of the minutes.

Omar Rekik made his senior debut for Tunisia. He and Chambers can play CB in cups or an injury crisis.

 

I know we were taking the piss out of Arsenal Bell because he’s just another in a long line of ITKs but he reported that we were in for Maddison last week and now that’s been confirmed by other journos. Bell hasn’t missed thus far afaik

There is no reason for Holding to be at Arsenal next season except to satisfy the Brexit contingent of the fan base.

I don't think we need 5 CBs. We don't have Europe.

Personally, I don't even think we need White. Gabi, Saliba, and Holding can play most of the minutes in CB, since Holding can also play LCB.

We could also get rid of Cedric (probably impossible) and have Chambers act as backup RB and emergency CB.

I'd be so mad if we buy White and miss out on other positions. I'd be even madder if we buy White, sell Saliba, and miss out on other positions.

Under the limited budget understanding, we really don't need another CB. All our money should be spent on midfield and RB as top priorities.

This is where our problem lies. It is in Arsenal's and Saliba's best interests that he stays and plays. Arteta on the other hand, doesn't have the luxury of bedding in youth who are not already the best in the squad in their position. His goal is to not get sacked by Christmas. All of the decisions we make are going to have this very short term goal in mind.

 

I don't think Arteta's job is in any danger whatsoever. There have never been any real rumors of him leaving, besides mad people online (myself included) thinking he's shit.

The actual decision makers seem perfectly happy with him.

 

If we are sitting 9th in November, Arteta is gone. The only reason he survived is because we didn't have fans in the stadium. If Emery got to play his second season without fans in the stadium, he would have survived too.

Arteta is starting the season on thin ice.

 

Even if we get Ben White, we are a long way from competing for the league title.
