Yeah, I didn’t really notice a difference. It’s close enough that a lay person like me can’t tell if we don’t know ahead of time.
I got to try out the Apple Vision Pro today and one of their demos for immersive video was highlights from MLS Cup 2023. It was pretty darn cool (would have been cooler if it were 2024), it fell somewhere in-between watching on TV and being there, leaning closer to being there. I don’t know that I’d watch every game that way it’s a little too close to the action for a game like football where wider angles are beneficial, but it would be awesome to be able to switch to an immersive review for replays of goals and the like. Actual games were disappointingly lower resolution compared to a standard broadcast and compared to what other content available on the AVP.
I had to look up what Apple Vision Pro was (which is a $3500 headset that with accessories can run to just over $4K). I can't imagine ever buying a single user device at that price, however, the specs are extremely impressive and likely to get better over time.
It’s definitely a very expensive bit of kit, especially when compared to something like the Meta Quest 3 which is one-tenth of the price. We had those at my last job for “meetings” and accepting the novelty of my 20 minute demo is probably biasing me the Vision Pro felt like a 10× leap in quality. I’m assume (hope?) the price comes down in future versions. The original Mac was $7800 adjusted for inflation and today I can go buy something that runs rings around it for $600.
I would love for them to come down in price because they would be wonderful for portable work stations. I lug around 3 screens in my backpack for work, and having a pair of glasses that offers even more screen real estate would be awesome.
10× leap in quality. Wasn't Magic Leap at one time expected to be a big deal in VR and AR? They had said their headset was going to be cooler than all others but it seems like they kinda disbanded and disappeared before it really got a chance to catch on.
I refuse to "upgrade" from my 2011 plasma TV and it has 3D capabilities. Of course, to use it I'd need to find the 3D glasses that came with it, glasses I haven't used in 15 years.....
I held onto my Sony plasma as long as I could. Still think it had the best picture for watching movies.
Plasma tech was so great the latest OLEDs are just now reaching it's level of picture quality - 15 years later.... But I get why they switched to a differnt tech; Plasmas eat a lot of power. I can literally see my power meter monitoring jump when I turn on my tv...
I loved my 2014 Panasonic plasma which also had 3D capability. I thought 3d with 3d Blu-ray was pretty good, but source material disappeared. Plus it was a problem when there were more than 2 of us.
