GAME: Los Angeles Galaxy (0-0-3) at San Jose Earthquakes (1-0-1).

    TIME: Saturday, 10 p.m. EDT.

The Los Angeles Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes renew their rivalry as they square off for the first time this season at Spartan Stadium.

Both the Galaxy and Earthquakes have enjoyed a measure of success in MLS, with each team winning a championship the last two years.

San Jose knocked off Los Angeles to win the 2001 MLS Cup. The Galaxy had made it to the MLS Cup three times before finally winning it last year.

Los Angeles had an MLS high 51 points last season followed by San Jose's 45 points.

The Earthquakes are eager to play the Galaxy after playing second-fiddle in the division and losing the series 4-1 last season.

``We have another game coming up and we are looking forward to our game with LA,'' said San Jose coach Frank Yallop. ``They are our biggest rivals and hopefully we will get a good result out of that game.''

The Galaxy are still searching for their first win after earning three ties over the first three games. Cobie Jones scored in the 20th minute as Los Angeles played the MetroStars to a 1-1 tie last Saturday.

``We've done well so far, but this was the best we've played so far,'' said Jones. ``Obviously it's not the result we wanted.''

The Earthquakes are 1-0-1 and tied with the Galaxy for second place in the Western Division behind Kansas City.

San Jose forward Brian Mullan scored in the 81st minute as San Jose overcame an own goal to tie the Kansas City Wizards 1-1 last Saturday.

Kansas City took the lead in the 74th minute when San Jose goalkeeper Pat Onstad knocked the ball into his own goal.

``I have nothing to say about it really, I am absolutely gutted,'' said Onstad. ``But the guys really battled back for me. I owe them two points.''

Onstad has a 0.90 goals-against average after two games.

STANDINGS: Galaxy - 3 points, 2nd place (tied), 1 PB, Western Conference. Earthquakes - 3 points, 2nd place (tied), Western Conference.

TEAM LEADERS: Galaxy - Carlos Ruiz, 2 goals and 4 points; three players with 1 assist. Earthquakes - Mullan, Brian Ching and Todd Dunivant, 1 goal; Donovan, 2 assists; Mullan, 3 points.

GOALKEEPERS: Galaxy - Kevin Hartman (0-0-3, 0.90 GAA); Dan Popik (no appearances). Earthquakes - Onstad (1-0-1, 0.95); Josh Saunders (no appearances).

    2002 SEASON SERIES: Galaxy, 4-1.

LAST MEETING: Sept. 22; Galaxy, 1-0. At San Jose, Ruiz beat Joe Cannon on a penalty kick in stoppage time to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-0 victory over San Jose on Saturday night and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Galaxy - 0-0-3 on the road; Earthquakes - 0-0-1 at home.

Two errors. The first and most obvious:

    "Crew-Earthquakes Preview"

    The second is math:

"The Earthquakes are 1-0-1 and tied with the Galaxy for second place in the Western Division behind Kansas City."

"STANDINGS: Galaxy - 3 points, 2nd place (tied), 1 PB, Western Conference. Earthquakes - 3 points, 2nd place (tied), Western Conference."
