:D Anyone know which player is a vegan. Pat Onstad mentioned that someone on the Quakes was a vegan, and being a vegan myself, I am interested in finding out which player it is. Does anyone know? Or can anyone guess?

I think it's DeRo. Not positive, though.

EDIT: Confirmed. The 2004 Media Guide says "Eats Ital cuisine (only natural foods, vegetarian)...Excellent cook of Ital cuisine, favorite dish is Curry Au Roti"

DeRosario is vegan....at the post-final party in LA, I had my vegan shirt on, as I too am a vegan, and he flipped...came up to me to ask where I got the shirt, how long I has been vegan, all of those things...his friends were vegan too and we all took a picture flashing a triumphant "V" sign....

he does where leather Pumas though...if you want to nitpick...;)

    Viven los vegans!

Yep it's DeRosario. Myself a vegetarian/struggling vegan, we commiserated at the Championship party at Brittanica Arms about the lack of vegetarian food.

If he's not a vegan for political reasons, that may be why he wears leather. But who cares why as long as he is?

And who knew so many soccer fans were vegetarian/vegan? Yes, viva la vegans!

what many people do not know is that Carl Lewis is a vegan and has even published a cookbook titled "Very Vegetarian"....it is quite good with lots of really good desserts....

as a vegan with a more political/ethical side to himself, I love the fact the DeRo is vegan...it is true, as long as he IS does not matter WHY....

    and you go, IBT....:D

suprisingly, there are alternatives...I am currently wearing a pair of Umbro's that are synthetic that set me back quite alot of scratch....

while there are not many synthetic leather alternatives, they do exist...Reebok, Kappa, and Joma (i think) make some quality synths that play and feel like murdered hide...the Nike Vapors are all synth, but they are crap and the studs snap off on hard surfaces....adidas does not make any synths and when I have contacted customer service to inquire, they said there were no palns in the future...

it takes some time, like most things, but there are always animal-free options available...it takes time and research. but usually not much more money, to be able to find an animal-free/cruelty-free item.....

in fact, I just bought some vegan marshmallows that taste just as strange and have the same bizarro texture as "regular" ones....

Man, this thread is totally off the soccer vein, but, I guess that's what make these boards kind of cool.

Alright, I'm know I'm opening myself up here, but I love a great Tri-tip sandwich! I can't help it.

I did, however, read an interesting article in the latest National Geographic that compelled me to curb my meat consumption even more (started cuttin' back years ago).

O.K., here's the tidbit......According to NatGeo, it takes 239 gallons of oil to raise and process 1 cow to market. Kind of sobering, given the current price/availability of oil.

Now, kind of back to soccer, we went to the EQ's autograph signing at Xmas in the park last year after the Cup....DeRo was the nicest guy, him and Eklund (maybe Ronnie's the other Vegan?).

No wonder DeRo can keep running long after the others are showing signs of fatigue--it's not those alkaline batteries but the meatless diet. He truly does seem to be a nice guy, and a real person--we talked to him after a day game when he was just hanging out -- not in autograph alley, but very accessible, talking to people without a protective fence. He and his little girl walked out behind us, hopped into a minivan about the same vintage as mine, and headed down 11th street toward the freeway with the masses.

Now if only Spartan would offer veggie dogs...

There was an interesting article in Harper's a few months ago called "The Oil We Eat" that addressed similar issues.

Here's a link for those who might be interested:

(One note for vegetarians: Petroleum products are used to create fertilizer. Make my veggies organic and locally grown, please!)

I was vegetarian for about 6 years and just recently stopped for no apparent reason. I tried the whole vegan think for about a month but it just didn't work. I'm part French and we have a strong love affair with dairy products, so maybe that was why.

Good on DeRo for being Vegan, but he must feel like an outcast in Canada. My friend is from Canada and his whole family have a hard time grasping the whole vegetarian scene.

Flashman, no question is stupid, unless it pertains to the Galaxy...:)

a vegan is meat/dairy/ovo free...no cheese, milk, eggs or deriatives...more intense ones avoid honey, food colors, particular brands of beer, leather products, anything that may at one time been considered an animal....

    organic is defintely the way....

Petroleum based products are used in synthetic leathers, so it is impossible to live a life that is not based on murder and exploitation of other life forms...

I just choose not to be involved with they murder and exploitation of animals....humans are fair game! ;)

God, DeRo could be one of the World's top players if he got proper electrolyes and enzymes.

But seriously, I'd be interested in learning what supplements he takes to keep strength up. I started the Atkins, pretty hard-core, feel almost hyper-alert and energized now, and never having lifted before, I can curl twice the weight I could 6 months ago, and my fitness level is extremely high now, by the scientific measure of my over-40 league play. Same excersize regimen the whole time. Yes, I take vitamins that they recommend you take if you're doing the Atkins, but none of that creatine or anything.

Ital? That's not vegan, but Vegetarian. Never met a Jamaican rasta that has land that doesn't own a goat or two for milk. I vacation there every year.

Not to mention Vegetarians produce almost 10x the amount of methane gas http://www.flat-d.com/vegetarians.html than the average non-vegetarian, destroying our precious ozone.

This might be why Dero looks like he propelled himself through all those defenders the other day.

oh come on now, vegan farts are detroying the ozone moreso than the destruction of the rainforest to create more pastures, all of the fertilizers being produced to grow the grains to feed the animals you plan on semi-digesting?

    from http://www.vegan.org/about_veganism/environment.html
Animal agriculture's dependence on higher yields accelerates topsoil erosion on our farmlands, rendering land less productive for crop cultivation, and forcing the conversion of wilderness to grazing and farm lands.(8) Animal waste from massive feedlots and factory farms is a leading cause of pollution in our groundwater and rivers.(9) The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has linked animal agriculture to a number of other environmental problems, including: contamination of aquatic ecosystems, soil, and drinking water by manure, pesticides, and fertilizers; acid rain from ammonia emissions; greenhouse gas production; and depletion of aquifers for irrigation.(10)

    and

In a time when population pressures have become an increasing stress on the environment, there are additional arguments for a vegan diet. The United Nations has reported that a vegan diet can feed many more people than an animal-based diet. For instance, projections have estimated that the 1992 food supply could have fed about 6.3 billion people on a purely vegetarian diet, 4.2 billion people on a 85% vegetarian diet, or 3.2 billion people on a 75% vegetarian diet

so I will happily take my vegan farts....they smell like roses:)

for real, this is about DeRo being vegan and not for us to say whosse/which diet is better...I do what I do, you do what do and LA sucks....everything is beautiful...

    :D
