Also a mind reader, I can't see where you posted before post #20 for Gronum to know not only that you needed a transfer, but what time you were landing. I'm baffled.

so the sandton stop on the Gautrain, I should be able to get a taxi from there to my hotel right? Is this an area that is littered with cabs or should I get a number to call one up?

Get a number - the gautrain si still very new and the taxis might not have cottoned on yet. Also you are on the last train (we hope you have made it) so it will be late. You should not pay too much for the taxi ride- it is really not far to your hotel.

Haven't seen you itinerary yet but might be worth your while to catch the Gautrain to Sandton instead of going to springs first. Find somewhere to store your luggage, go to the fan park to watch the oz game then only go to your hotel after the game.

I'm going to need to get from ORT to Hatfield. A page on tshwane.gov.za says:
Does anybody know if this is actually going to happen, how much it is etc., or what a better alternative is? Cheers.

Don't know any more than this yet either - will go to theairport next week and see where the ticket collection point is and if you can find any shuttles. When are you landing (date/time)?

For what it's worth, I did the transfer yesterday for JNB to Sandton.

    A taxi will run about 500 - 550 ZAR.

I took the Luxe shuttle bus for 245 ZAR. (The tourist information counter said that Intercity ghad a bus for 135 ZAR to Sandton, but when I checked with Intercity, they said that they offered no such transfer).

fyi I saw the (soon-to-open) Gautrain station in Sandton; it is quite close (i.e. very walkable) to the ticketing centre (which isn't far from mandela Sqaure, etc.).

i need to get to Sandton city mall from OR tambo . My friend with whom i'll be staying for 3 weeks lives in Fourways close to montecasino and his office is at Sandton city mall. So if i were to take a gautrain from OR tambo to Sandton, how far is the mall from the Sandton train station? My friend would then give me a ride from the mall till fourways.( If he was busy at work, how much would a cab ride to fourways from the mall cost?)

don't know what the taxi would cost to fourways, but you can walk to the mall from the station, it's maybe 10-15 minutes, in an area with lots of foot traffic

When are you arriving here? Gautrain will start operating on tuesday, 8 June, and if you will be arriving any time after monday then I will advice you to use Gautrain which will cost you R100 from O.R. Tambo Int Aiport to Sandton. Yes, it is walkable. My offices are overlooking Gautrain's Sandton station and I walk a lot from my office pass the ticketing centre.

He can come pick u up during his tea break, that's how close it is. Somehow one can say the station forms part of the mall to give you an idea of how close it is.

How bad is the taxi in Sandton area? I am planning to take Gautrain, then taxi in Sandton train. Do they take you around making big turn just to make extra ZAR?

Is there any specific taxi brand I should avoid (I know in some countries in Asia, there are some taxi that need to be avoid and some don't)?

    Thanks.

My hostel is in Rosebank. I'm taking the Gautrain to Sandton. Should I connect to the Metrorail? Is this alll in one station?

No metrorail in Rosebank and no Gautrain to Rosebank yet. Take a taxi to Rosebank from the Gautrain station - please check the site - there are some shuttle buses from the Gautrain station in Sandton to various points - trying to find a site that says where the shuttles go.....

Found it - very primitive but you will be able to get a shuttle bus from the Sandton Gautrain station to Rosebank - http://join.gautrain.co.za/Assets/Download/S6-Sandton-Rosebank.pdf

Please check the Gautrain bus shuttle schedules on http://join.gautrain.co.za/map.aspx - put your cursor on the SANDTON station and then check the Buses and Transport. Select the suburb you want to go to and try and decypher the Bus route! In short - the gautrain stops in Sandton then has a few shuttle service buses to suburbs around Santon - Wendywood, fourways, Sandton, Rivonia and Rosebank

Ah, just read that the Train line from park station to hatfield doesn't open until 2011. Thanks for the response. I would have been waiting a year for the connecting train. What are your thoughts of the Rosebank area? I'm only there for 36 hours and I thought it would be an easy ride to the fan fest in Sandton.
