Unfortunately I was only able to see about 15 minutes of the scrimmage yesterday. I saw that Saunders was in goal, Alvarez, Mullan and Dunivant were on the pitch. I didn't recognize #21. I did see Donovan on the sidelines. Did the Quakes emerge victorious? Who scored? Was Saunders ever tested? I know this may seem like idle banter, but the real season has not started yet and this is our time to really speculate on how Frank is going to do this year.
I watched just after you left. Number 21 was Bryce Wegerle, still trying out apparently. Final was 1-1. About 10 minutes into second half Lagos in for Mulrooney, Agoos in for Dayak, and Ching in for Wegerle. Then DeRo had his first competitive action, in for Brian Mullan (Jamil Walker went back to right mid), and De Ro scored with his first touch of the game. SJSU scored on their second shot of the whole game. Well taken by a big fella who beat Saunders to the left low post from the top of the box. Looked as if Frank was evaluating the new guys more or less. I wouldn't read too much into the result.
How did Wegerle look? If he's still in camp at this late juncture (anybody else always think of Dan Carvey whenever they read that word?) I would think this bodes well for his chances of nabbing, at worst, a Developmental Player spot.
He looked Big, that's what he looked. He had good control and touch, pretty good vision. Missed a one timer from the spot with only the keeper to beat, but hit it well. It rolled wide left. I'm not sure he was giving it his all though.
Saunders was not tested at all, but looked a little weak in the net. It is tough to judge him on the game. Alvarez looked really good on the flank. He was able to get forward quickly and he created some good chance. Other than that most of the young guys were played fairly well.
Bruce Wegerle is the son of Steve Wegerle, a great NASL player and the nephew of former MLS and US national teamer Roy Wegerle. There was a third brother - Geoff - who is sort of to the Wegerle brothers was Vince was to the DiMaggio's. Geoff Wegerle actually has a tie to the Bay area, having played for Oakland in the late 70s.
So, according to some of the posts it went well, it was a match to sort of see how some of the new talent is doing...... I was going to go but I have to get my priority's straight, I decided not to cut class to go and watch. ;( Was their a lot of people there? TRANSFORM MARI
All the more reason for me yell at J-Co last night: "Stay off that ankle!" Seriously, is it smart to have someone walk up 2 flights of steps for a fashion show if you broke your ankle and can't play?
To me, the score of this match and how the guys played are both not so important. I was curious mainly to see who was back from injury. I am very happy to see DeRo get some time. I doubt he'll get the start next week due to not being match fit, but hopefuly we'll see him on late. Any word on the status of Russell, J-Co, and any of the other dinged up Quakes?
