I know that in the US Indoor Arena Soccer is more popular than the Fifa sanctioned and official world indoor soccer which is called Futsal but does anyone know if the US is making progress? Futsal will likely be an Olympic sport in the not so far future and currently the US national team is mostly made up of Indoor soccer league players as their are no pro Futsal teams. For those wondering Futsal is 5 a side soccer played on a Basketball or slightly large court (1 Goliae and 4 field players). There are no walls like in hockey or US Indoor soccer and its 20 Mins a half. The ball is small and heavy with little bounce. No limit on subs. Not surprisingly Brazil is World Champion as the game was born there. I saw a game on TV today it was Brazil 3 x 2 Argentina. Brazil 39th straight win over Argentina. Though this one was close. Anyone play it here or know of leagues?
The game was born in Uruguay actually. I have yet to see it played here, any league I've been in has been the North-American style.
Last march there was a three nation futsal tournament in Maryland (Canada, Mexico, USA). I believe this was the first time that the US played a futsal match at home. I have only been to one game (Ottawa Wizards vs Canadian national team), and I must say it was a lot of fun. Here is a picture from a selects match (Haiti vs Peru)... http://faroesefootball.tripod.com/misc/futsal.jpg before the Wizards game...
Futsal is played very often in Brazil (in some places, more than soccer), and I suppose in Spain and Portugal too, because I've seen fusal games several times in TVE internacional.
I play once in a while in the only futsal "league" that I know in South Texas. Here in McAllen, Texas, there is a local Baptist church that has a great basketball court in which they have futsal retas. Teams play as they show up. I know that in Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas, Mexico there is a full-fledge futsal amateur league. The Reynosa, Mexico newspaper, El Mañana , shows the results, but I don't know much about league beyond that. El Chapulin Colorado
Futsal is a great game to play and require lots of skill -- much more than American indoor soccer in my opinion -- but it's boring as hell to watch! It reminds me of NBA basketball.
these year will have the World Cup of Futsal, and the European Cup a lot of Futsal in the next couple months
The US placed 3rd in the '89 Futsal WC, and 2nd in the '92 Futsal WC. In '89 the US actually beat Brazil in the second group stage. Lost in the semi's to the hosts before winning the 3rd place game. In '92 the US tied Brazil in the second group stage. Then lost to Brazil in the final. '96 was not a good performance though, and the US failed to Qualify in '00. The US is the only Concacaf nation to do well at the event really. Americans tend not to care much about the international standard if a governing body isnt in charge and in place before the US adopts whatever we decide to adopt. Hence the differences between basketball in the US (and even between different levels in the US) and futsal/indoor soccer as well. The one thing about Futsal in this country that is in its favor is that any standard gym seems to do, if the equipment (ball, nets) are available I could see how it would be more convenient. On the other hand, gyms are ruled by pickup basketball here, have a rough time trying to convince basketball players to give up a court for futsal. Maybe as part of college athletics, especially in wet/cold areas of the coutnry during the winter, where courts could be scheduled for soccer enthusiasts to play futsal.
I play futsal for a team in Pennsylvania but because of the lack of knowledge of the game there are only about 3 other teams that we play, and none of the teams have very many subs at all.
There is a men's futsal travel league (amateur) attempting to organize in Texas. Whether there will be sufficient interest remains to be seen. http://www.stxfutsal.org/modules.php?name=News&new_topic=5
Here in Southern California soccer is still king, but Futsal will hopefully make strides. I have my 11 year old son starting to play futsal. I know there is is a club here in this area called Socalfutsal, that is run by one of the guys who has played on the US national futsal team a few times. The US did qualify for the WC this year along with Cuba in the CONCACAF tournament.
From FAST: I hope there is interest. The fee is not that high and I think there is enough infrastructure and interest in indoor/futsal. BUT. The region for the league must be made smaller for an amateur league, i.e. regionalized. Sure. San Antonio, Laredo (why no Laredo?!), Austin, Rio Grande Valley makes sense since it's about a 3 to 5 hours radius of travel. But. From RGV to Dallas is about 9 hours and to Houston about 7 to 8 hours. Anything outside of the San Antonio, Laredo, and Corpus Christi region and you are talking gas money and overnight stay. Nevertheless. Wish 'em the best. They seem to be moving forward. El Chapulin Colorado
I had my U8 team playing against U10 and we did very well. Most coaches were extremely impressed with the ball handling and passing skills that my kids have. I was going to look for an adult league but I have bad knee (torn ACL)
If you are in Northen california area, you're in luck. Futsal Republic will be opening its first largent Futsal Specific Facility in San Francisco Bay Area. When I say specific, i mean the courts are futsal specific courts (the one used in the world cup), using futsal specific lines , and futsal-specific goals. Futsal has been gaining tremendous momentum in the last 4 years and in SF bay area, the multipurpose court usage are now using it more for futsal than any other sports. But the players have to bear with the confusing red baseketball lines, white volley ball lines, green badminton lines, etc etc etc. You know what I mean. Anyways, check this website out. www.futsalrepublic.com . The facility will open early january and will have 6 leagues in its inception along with tournaments every season. Cheers...
http://www.concacaf.com/viewCompetition.aspx?id=37 In May 2004, the USA played a "home-and-home" against Honduras, with both games played at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Love the attendance figures: 18.05.2004: Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA; US Cellular Arena (A: 217) USA - HONDURAS 5:1 (2:0) 20.05.2004: Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA; US Cellular Arena (A: 203) HONDURAS - USA 0:2 (0:0)
I was at both of those games. Those attendance figures are grossly inflated. There were more players and team personnel than fans...
here in Oceanside there are a lot of adult futsal leagues and there are youth futsal programs. I have also seen it in other parts of san diego so in local level I am thinking it is progressing but I am not sure how far we are in the national level.
I would be interested in playing. I live in Orland Park (southwest Chicago suburb) Where are you and when do you play?
My daughters club does pick-up games of Futsal in the winter in their training facility. I have noticed an increased ability on the ball for the kids that play. They have a blast playing, too.
