During the SuperDraft broadcast over the internet only, they had a trailer for the film "The Game of their Lives". It looks great. I wish I could download that somewhere. Spinetingling good.
For those who haven't seen it, navigate to the draft page on MLSNET.com. Look for the link to live video of the draft and it's archived - trailer starts approx. 2:34:16 in. The Magpie
Haven't seen it yet, but any film that stars Gavin Rossdale-Stefani has Academy Award stamped all over it! I hope it comes out more like Hoosiers than a Bush album.
Here's the official blurb from the production company's website: http://www.crusaderentertainment.com/crusader/preproduction/index.asp#game
That's not a good sign... August/early September is traditionally the time of year Hollywood studios dump their worst movies into theaters. One positive though is that the film will not be going up against any big blockbusters so it could do well at the box office.
Just because a movie isn't a big money maker, doesn't make it a poor movie. This might be a poor movie, but it might not be. ...and they're releasing it then because not too many Americans care about a 1950 soccer match.
August releases tend to be crap not just on a financial basis but also in terms of quality. There are plently of great movies that don't make a lot of money but most of those are released in the fall, with some during the winter and spring seasons. The summer is a time for movies which will appeal to the lowest common denominator audiences. Some of these movies have the potential to make a lot of money, and studios tend to release them in May, June and July. Then they take whatever is left of the made-for-summer flicks and dump it into August. I'm not saying they're releasing it then because it's a poor movie - it's probably a matter of them not having confidence that a movie about soccer could do well in the US. But I hope the movie is a success. It could definitely be a good move to release the film early in September. With little competition to go against, it could do well. If they were to pit it against the summer blockbusters, you might as well forget about it.
I'm with you on the one mate "Miracle" - 1980 US hockey team & "The Game of Their Lives" 1950 US WC team
John Harkes said that they're still cutting the movie together. The trailer was probably just an early cut together trailer they made to get some buzz. Studios do that a lot now. Make trailers for movies before they're done editing.
And sometimes stuff that was in the trailer ends up not being in the final cut of the movie. Happened with Scary Movie 3.
This represents old thinking. The new reality, exhibited during the last decade when domestic theatrical ticket sales expanded from 1 billion annually to 1.6 billion, is that there is almost no bad month in which to release a movie, including August. Below is a list of successful movies released in August. The numbers in parenthesis are the opening weekend box office, followed by the cumulative total of each movie's theatrical run. Spy Kids 2 08-07-02 (16,711,716) Miramax Cume: 85,846,429 Snake Eyes 08-07-98 (16,310,373) Paramount Cume: 55,591,409 Halloween : H20 08-05-98 (16,187,724) Miramax Cume: 55,018,979 Unforgiven 08-07-92 (15,018,007) Warner Bros Cume: 101,157,447 Conspiracy Theory 08-08-97 (19,313,566) Warner Bros. I am sure Phil Anschutz and Crusader Entertainment would be thrilled with any of the above cumulative totals.
I haven't seen the trailer but I know I'm going to see this movie. And Does It really matter that much if its released in "August". People will watch if they like what they see.....Oh wait ....its in "August" it must be crap. Give me a Break.
I bet Harkes is going to make the soccer in the movie great. I hope it will be very inspirational and maybe create some more fans for the game of soccer. I hope MLS or the National team does some kind of advertising or marketing program around the movie. I think it would benefit the movie as well as soccer in the USA.
That and because this is being done by the same people that did Hoosiers, you can bet that they will put emphasis on making the soccer scenes look like a real game. It doesn't matter when its being released because they know that people like this will go to see it whenever its playing. Too bad there won't be midnight showings on the first day of its release featuring movie-goers dressed as their favorite 1950 US player.
Bad ass little trailer there. I hope they pitch the "Makers of Hoosiers and Rudy" part a lot (it looks like they are) because this movie needs to have a little more going for it than just soccer. That said, I had a chill watching the trailer, and will definetly grab as many friends as I can for the opening.
I was thinking last night that it'd be really cool to have the premier at Victoria Street on the jumbotron. Or Crew Stadium. I wonder if they could get a sellout to see the movie. Probably not. But if they combined it with an LA or Crew home game... I'd definitely consider flying out to LA for that. Or how 'bout the US WCQ on August 18? Providing it's a home game, that is. Hell, if it's not, combine showing the away game on a jumbotron with the GotL Premiere. There's some great opportunities here.
I download the video of the MLS SuperDraft off of MLSnet.com, converted the Real Media file into and AVI file, then edited out the 2 minutes trailer from the 3+ hours of other footage. I then tried to clean up the image a little and make it a bit smoother looking. At any rate, I have a 20MB file of the trailer if anyone wants it. As I have no way of hosting the trailer for other to just download it, if you have a DSL, Cable or faster connection, I'm on AIM SoccerBroccoli and I'll just send it to you that way (albeit it 30k/s max just because AIM sucks). If you use Kazaa it might be on there too. However, if someone is able to host the 20MB file, please ask for the file, I'll give it to you and more people can enjoy it.
