i'm looking at colleges and was wondering if many students from there go to rev's games? how long of a drive is it from the school? also, are there any carpools since a lot of students dont have cars? just an important factor for me in college decisions
honk: My daughter is a freshman, used to hold a season ticket. Now that she has no car, no $$, and there's a lot to do on and around the campus, I know she won't come to a game before the semester is over and also doubt we'll see her at the tailgate more than once the whole season. There are a limited number of games before the spring semester ends, anyway. I don't get the impression there are a lot of would-be Revs fans at Brown...lots of non locals/internationals who might be soccer friendly but don't have the local sports bug, and are too involved with on campus stuff to have much interest. Those who go there all seem to love it, though. -Amy
thats kind of what i feared. i live on the north shore so if i went to brown, gillette would be closer to me than from where i live now! but i also had that feeling that since many of the students are from out of state, they wouldnt be interested in the revs [i'm actually a Galaxy fan but i do attend Revs games], or even if they were, they'd have issues with getting to and from games because of a lack of cars. it just seems like such a shame that you can be so close to the stadium but not be able to attend the games.
I went to Brown, pre-MLS days, and would bet that you can probably find a few students who would be interested in going to games. Also, I'm sure there's a large fan base in Providence that shouldn't be too hard to track down. Gillette is less than 30 mins. away (plus traffic) so its not a huge time commitmet to get there. You would need to have a car or get a ride. I may be wrong but I doubt there's public transportation between Providence and Foxboro just for Revs games. One last thing, as an alum, I can tell you that Brown is a great school with great students. And Brown's soccer team is one of the better ones in the NCAA (see Cory Gibbs).
My son, JackRev, is going to Brown in September. He goes to all the Revs games, so he'll be looking to get to Foxboro (I mean Gillette) in the fall. Sounds like a Rev support group should be formed at Brown.
thanks for the info guys. i didnt know cory gibbs went there! i'm just a jr. in high school right now and was looking getting a head start just checking out schools [dont know what career or major i want to go for but i kind of like how Brown is kind of far from my house but not too far- also like how it's closer to the stadium than my house!]
Among other things, Brown has an excellent English program, but keep in mind that it is the Ivy league. $$ may not be an issue, but that's just something to keep in mind (coming from someone who fell in love with the Brown academic programs and then found out it was nowhere near a realistic price tag for me.)
I'm a sophomore at Brown now, and I'd have to say that the better departments are in the realm of liberal arts. The English department is exceptional, as is Political Science. There are a couple of good sciences departments (Neuroscience, Planetary Geo, etc.), but I may be a little biased seeing as I recently dropped engineering for urban studies. If you have any questions about Brown, feel free to PM me and I'll help out as best as I can.
Currently in third year at Brown. Haven't gone to more than a handful of games in the past because I didn't have a car, but this year I do, so I will be planning on attending more games. I occasionally have seen a Revs jersey around campus, and I know a few people who would be willing to go to games. I also have a bit of a different view on the academic side of things then the previous poster, but as he pointed out, everyone is going to be biased, and I am a math/science guy. Perhaps the liberal arts departments are more consistent, but I know that the computer science, neuroscience and applied math departments are considered among the very best in the country. I'm in physics and have found it quite acceptable. Like ruijorge2002, I'd be happy to answer any questions.
Last month Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences and Pacific Coast Soccer Club BU17 Gold center midfielder Emmanuel Briceno was admitted Early Decision at Brown University, so there's another Galaxy fan to add to the mix in Providence.
haha, i wish i could say i go there. i'm only a junior right now but i may apply there [have to actually go visit the school sometime before this fall and see if i do like it], but i really hope i'm accepted. i know i wouldnt be accepted at other Ivies like Harvard or Yale, but i hope Brown gives a little more slack to its applicants.
i applied to brown and if i get accepted you can bet that im gonna be at gillette whenever there is a match there, ive been to 3 nats games at foxboro/cmgi in the past 3 years, and its a great experience.... i got the entire netherlands team to autograph a dutch jersey, including davids, last spring. although i have never attended a non-doubleheader mls game i would def go next season because of the big razor's proximity to brown.
