I also posted this in the Spain section but was wondering if there are any Americans currently playing in Serie A? I believe we have alot to offer and think we would do well in Italy as well as Spain. Maybe even Serie B?

There are currently no Americans in Serie A but i remember after WC 2002, Perugia was interested in Clint Mathis, and many big teams wanted DeMarcus Beasley.

Since Alexi Lalas, there have only been a handful of Americans and quasi-Americans in Italy, and most of them never appeared in a game. These I know of -

1996 - Roy Lassiter - trained for 4 months with Serie B team Genoa. Not sure if he ever appeared in a game.

2000- Giovanni Savarese (yes, I know he's Venezuelan, but he made his name in the American college and pro ranks, so I consider him quasi-American) - purchased by Perugia but immediately loaned to Serie C1 team Viterbese, where he appeared in a few games. More recently, he was at Sassari Torres (another Serie C1 team) for a bit last year.

2002 - Jamar Beasley - trained with Serie C2 team Puteolana. Not sure if he ever appeared in a game.

Then there is the case of Giuseppe Rossi, who is from New Jersey and learned the game in the American youth club system before going to Parma at about 13 or 14. They sold him to Manchester United over the summer, so he's no longer in Italy. He has dual citizenship (US and Italy) and has been playing with Italy's U-17 and now U-18 teams and is considered a very promising talent.

And finally, there is the strange saga of Brazilian-American Jonathan Carlos Elliott, who was with Juve's Primavera team a couple of years ago but now is playing at Serie D team Rossanese. More (much MUCH more) about him here:

It'd be great if an American could make an impact there. DMB did draw some interest at one point, and the big clubs did take note of Adu after his performance at the U-17 World Cup. The biggest problem with Americans going to Italy is the severe restrictions enacted in 2002 on clubs signing non-EU players. Basically, if I understand it correctly, clubs are only allowed to sign one non-EU player per year, and then only if they get rid of one of their existing ones.
