    Hi all,

Does anyone know of any way to watch any of the Korea friendlies and K-league in the U.S. (Maryland area)? DirectTV, Dish, etc?

My father and I really want to be able to catch these games, but are very frustrated that we can't.

    Thanks for any help.

You can watch some of them through satellite dish. Where are you at?

    Hey,

I'm in the U.S. right now, state of Maryland (basically around the Washington D.C. area).

Satellite dish huh? Do you know which satellite company? DirectTV, Dish Network, etc.?

    Thanks for any help :)

    Not through DirectTV nor DishNetwork.
There are two Korean satellite companies (actually, more like brokers). Both have several channels but only 1 major channel. One has SBS and MBC and the other has KBS. I think it's like $20/month. But I heard one of them are moving to DishNetwork. They should have their own websites but I don't know their addresses.

I found a website that sells satellite products (http://www.emantechnology.com/KoreanTV.htm), and it refers to providing access to KISB (http://www.kisb.tv/index.asp). Do you know if I can watch the games (when they come on) via KISB?

By the way, I really appreciate all the help you're providing. Thanks! :)

    Hey BigDevil,

I'm also a Korean living in DC area. There's a bar in Arlington called Summers and if we can get some people together for Korean games then the owner will order some games for us. I would really like to watch Korea vs. Japan on the 16th so let me know if you can get some people who might be interested. Contact me and let me know.

KISB is the one that has MBC. The other (forgot name) has KBS and SBS. I was gonna order it but didn't. When I called them and asked about whether they gonna air ALL that soccer match that's being aired in KBS and SBS of Korea, they said not all. They can't air FIFA sponsored matches due to copyright issues. They did air last KOR-SCO match live. Since, KBS and SBS tend to carry more soccer matches, I'd go with them than with KISB.

My folks live in MD and I set them up with a satellite for Telstar 5 (KISB).

It takes some doing -- If you're not handy I'd suggest calling an satellite TV guy to set it up. Also, I think if you go to Korean groceries they have ads for folks who set this up.

Now if you're really up for it:

The satellite you want is Galaxy 10R
    http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/South-Korea.shtml

    Use http://www.lyngsat.com/tracker/g10r.shtml
to locate the azimuth and elevation from your address. Click close to your location on the map.

Use http://www.zipinfo.com/search/zipcode.htm to get your longitude and lattitude.

You should check to see from your roof (or wherever you plan to install the dish) that you have a clear line of site to the azimuth direction (e.g., no trees, buildings). I think the elevation is about ~35-40 so you should clear most low lying obstacles.

Lastly, you have to buy the dish and "receiver" (sorry I'm no techie). I got one for my folks from
    http://www.mpeg2-dvb.com/faq/foreign_tv_faq.htm

I THINK you need a Ku band for Galaxy 10R Korean stations.

BTW, I got a "smart LNB" feature thing -- the LED lights up when it gets a signal. You don't need this if you can carry a small TV set up with you on the roof.

If you have more questions feel free to email me. I'm no expert but I'll try to help.

BTW, I moved from the east cost to Korea just to see the games :) I got primo seats for the Korea-Japan game.

This doesn't sound like a bad idea :)
I'll ask around and see who I can scrounge up.

    WuTang,

Thanks so much for the info :)
    I really appreciate it

I did a little research, and I think the other company you might be talking about is ISKYCOM?

    Cappucino,

    WOW :) !!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for a very detailed and helpful post!

Yeah, I did a bit more research this past weekend and I'm glad that everything I saw pretty matches up with what you described.

Luckily, I happen to have some experience installing a dish + receiver (I setup my father w/a DirectTV dish...and then found out that Korean programming wasn't available...*grr*), but I have a couple of questions for you, if you don't mind.

I think you're right about Galaxy10R being the *key* satellite, seeing how KBS, SBS, YTV, etc. is also available on that satellite for free w/out subscription. But, I also noticed that ISKYCOM is available on that satellite as well, and from what I've read, ISKYCOM provides KBS, SBS, YTV, etc. for a $20/month subscription charge. Do you know why anyone would want to *subscribe* to ISKYCOM, when it appears that those stations are available for free?

I was looking at the Telstar5 satellite as well, and noticed that there are 3 KISB stations. But from what I've read, 2 of these KISB stations are now scrambled? Does this mean that Telstar5's unreliability is something that you have to live with, since these 3 KISB stations are essentially free?

Btw, I'm *extremely* jealous that you're going to the game live :)

    Thanks for the help!

I don't know about the reliability of Telestar 5 -- I can say I have observed some disruption in the reception at my folks' but I don't know if that's the satellite or my crappy dish installation.

BTW, in my experience, getting DirecTV aligned is a cinch compared to getting a lock on T5.

Why pay ISKYCOM? Seems like they stick you for monthly package fee + EQUIPMENT AND INSTALLATION.

I guess you never know when a TV station decides to go scrambled (e.g., KISB going back and forth on a few channels) -- ISKYCOM has a contract with the providers to ensure your uninterrupted viewing pleasure. Then again, maybe they are betting on the fact that affluent Korean-Americans will go the easy route instead of going through all the research and trouble of DIY.

Order the equipment now (express delivery), make a trip to Home Depot (antenna mounting - perhaps the ole picnic table umbrella stand in a bucket of cement trick), buy a compass and protractor, DIY and enjoy the game next week :)

Alright, I'm convinced, I'm going to go ahead and order the equipment now. Thanks for all the help

By the way, is this the type of receiver you purchased for your parents:

    http://www.mpeg2-dvb.com/products/dig_system.htm
    (Digital System S3KS76)

And would you say that this place is safe enough to purchase from?

Thanks again, hopefully by this time next week, I'll have it all setup :)

I did receive it from them but don't expect customer service, real time shipping tracking etc.

If you're nervous about getting it before the big game next week I would suggest calling them to confirm that that set-up works with Galaxy 10R and that they can guarantee delivery on-time.

If you don't feel comfortable, search the web for other vendors.

    Good luck.

    Cappucino,

Thanks so much for all the information :).

I was able successfully find G10R for my parents (after a very arduous search), and I am very happy that they are happy with all the programming they have now (in addition to the fact that I'll be able to come over to watch any games televised from now on :) ).

Thanks again, your insight helped me out tremendously.
