    2. WINNERS & LOSERS: San Jose moves on top; Galaxy keeps sinking

    Winners:

With its 2-1 win over Columbus, SAN JOSE moved ahead of FC Dallas to take the Western Conference lead and, at 38 points, leads the overall standings; Eastern Conference leaders New England and Chicago each have 37 points. The Quakes win on Saturday marked its third straight and keeps them unbeaten at home this season. Dwayne De Rosario and Brad Davis scored against Columbus.

MetroStars Frenchman YOURI DJORKAEFF and FC Dallas Guatemalan CARLOS RUIZ each scored twice in a 2-2 tie as Dallas made its first Pizza Hut Park appearance in front of 15,000 fans. Ruiz's second goal came on a back-heel flick and Djorkaeff equalized with a chip from outside the penalty area past the far post. Both strikes are MLS Goal of the Week nominees, which can be viewed at:

American winger EDDIE LEWIS made his league debut for English second-tier Leeds, which he joined in the offseason from Preston, and set up the first goal of a 2-1 win over Millwall. The Yorkshire Post wrote that Lewis' "pace and trickery on the left looks set to become an important part of United's attacking armoury." Missouri product FRANK SIMEK started and went the full 90 for Sheffield Wednesday in its 0-0 tie with Stoke. Simek, 20, had been released in May by Arsenal, which last season loaned him out to Bournemouth and QPR. In Germany's Second Division, American defender GREGG BERHALTER scored from the penalty spot in Energie Cottbus' 2-1 win over Eintracht Braunschweig.

The NEW JERSEY WILDCATS blanked the regular-season champion Ottawa Fury, 3-0, to win the 2005 W-League title in front of an overflow crowd of 2,233. The Wildcats were led by MVP Kacey White, who had a goal and an assist in both the semifinals and final. White was one of several current and former University of North Carolina to play for the Wildcats. New Jersey was led in the back by U.S. national team defender Cat Reddick and Canada goalie Karina LeBlanc They also featured English internationals Rachel Unitt and Rachel Yankey.

The U.S. UNDER-18 NATIONAL TEAM, coached by Bob Jenkins, won the Milk Cup for the first time, defeating host Northern Ireland, 4-2, Friday night in the final. Boston College's Charlie Davies had a hat trick, and recent Chivas USA signee Rodrigo Lopez scored the first goal. The Americans reached the final by defeating Serbia & Montenegro 1-0, and tying Brazil, 1-1.

    Losers:

The LOS ANGELES GALAXY dropped to .500 with a 2-0 loss at Colorado, for which Jeff Cunningham notched his league-leading 11th goal of the season. The Galaxy has not won away from the Home Depot Center in more than a year and has notched one win in its last 10 league games.

Borussia Moenchengladbach keeper KASEY KELLER, the only American in action on the Bundesliga's opening weekend, conceded goals to Owen Hargreaves and Roy Makaay (2) in Bayern Munich's first game at the Allianz Arena. Makaay's goals, on breakaways, came while Bayern was playing a man down.

American midfielder Bobby Convey made his first league appearance since January for English second-tier READING, which lost at home its 2005-06 opener, 2-1, to Portsmouth. American Marcus Hahnemann was in goal for Reading. WATFORD, with American defender Jay DeMerit playing the full 90, went down, 2-1, to Preston.
