Leeds is 126 million dollars in the hole and will probably have to offload Viduka and Kewell. I would bet that Peter Reid would welcome a chance at acquiring quality free transfers. Reid is acquainted with American players because of his former days at Sunderland with Claudio Reyna. Perhaps he would take a chance on bringing in the likes of Clint Mathis, Damarcus Beasely, or Richard Mulrooney, all of whom I believe are in the last year of their contracts with MLS. P.S.: I know that Mathis has been crap for a while, but maybe he'll take his head out of his arse this season. 209
I'd think, if Reid stays, Reyna would be a good bet as Sunderland HAVE TO offload salary (and Reyna's one of their biggest earners). If Reid goes, then who knows?
From what i have heard over the last 2 days is that Reid will be offered the job tomorrow. Personally, i don't think think that Mathis is good enough to join Leeds (he at least isn't in good enough physical shape!) I figure Mathis would fit in at a lower premiership club like Spurs if he were to really work on his fitness. I'm sure the next manager would have a few million to spend on players. I doubt ANYONE would want to buy Mathis with his inflated value anyway. (at least the world cup probably took his value down some) I've said it before, and i'll say it again.... I would be more than happy to see Reyna in the white shirt. I'd rather have Martino though... I think he could be premiership quality.
Love for your team is great and all, but to say a player is good enough for mid-table Spurs but not good enough for just-out-of-relegation-zone-selling-players-to-pay-debts-and-reduce-payroll Leeds is to me, a little suspect, and only justifiable by a biased opinion of how important your own team is. Bringing in Mathis wouldn't necessitate a style of change play for Leeds, although he hasn't shown the athletic ability of the current strikers yet. I agree that Martino and Reyna may be better signings, though.
that makes sense then... maybe he will find a team that is willing to give him a chance since there will be no fee.... If you look at the strikers that each club have..... Smith/Bridges/Simon Johnson (who will stay for sure) + Viduka/Kewell (one of who may leave) and compare that to Robbie Keane/?Iversen? you'll see why someone like Spurs would have a lot more use for him. Even though we are near the bottom, you have to say that Leeds do have the stronger/better squad....
Reid's got the job full-time now. I've got to think Reyna is a good possibility. With all his injury problems in the past, his value is probably down from when he signed at Sunderland but they'll have to unload him after making the drop. I'm having dreams of Reyna providing service to Viduka, Smith, and Kewell (of course, they probably all won't be there next year...) Keeping my fingers crossed...
How do you figure? You both played the same teams and the same number of games. Spurs had much better results. A one off match can have a fluke result, but not 38 matches.
last few seasons... 01-02 Leeds 66 points Spurs 50 points 00-01 Leeds 68 points Spurs 49 points 99-00 Leeds 69 points Spurs 53 points 98-99 Leeds 67 points Spurs 47 points This season it is at.... Leeds 44 points Spurs 50 points Basically, Leeds are having a season where they are getting about as many points as spurs usually do..... and everyone thinks this season for leeds is just a blip..
Mulrooney wouldnt have the work permit settled. DMB is probably going to command more than Leeds would find prudent. Mathis in the last year of his MLS contract is most likely of those listed.
oh good! if Reid the manager, then I need to get my favorite Sunderland picture changed to Leeds colors.
there are wispers going around that mathis was being scouted by an epl team in houston... maybe it was leeds. anyone got anything on this? edit: misquoted source... removed second part of message.
If you're talking about the Leeds team from the past few years (not counting the current) then I would agree that Mathis wouldn't be able to start. However, that is the team that borrowed tremedous amount of money and is now deeply in debt. I am positive that in the next few years, the wages as Spurs will be much higher than the wages at Leeds.
