The subject says it all. If you know the band, they need no introduction. They are, simply put, the greatest band in existance. There are few hardcore NoMeansNo fans, people like myself who appreciate the genius of the Brothers Wright, probably even fewer who are hardcore soccer fans. Are there any of you out there?
after andy left, i thought they kind of, um, weren't so good. but the stuff of the brothers and andy kerr is simply out of this world good.
Be Strong, Be Wrong While I prefer the Andy Kerr era NoMeansNo to the Tom Holliston era NoMeansNo, there have been some great albums since Andy's departure. Namely, "Worldhood of the World (as such)" and "Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy?", as well as the incredible collection of unreleased pre-Andy and post-Andy material, titled "One Down, Two to Go." However, I've still been unable to get into "No One," their most recent full length. With the exception of one or two songs, it's pretty ordinary. Let's hope they redeem themselves with the new album, due out in Spring of 2004. Are you by chance on Soulseek?
I play Wrong and 0+1=2 all the time and I really dig Worldhood of the WOrld and Mr. Happy. They're more famous these days for the Hanson Brothers stuff which is always a great time. I've seen them probably six or seven times. I live in a small town now and we helped bring them in and had a good local punk band open. The local band brought the kids in and since the 'headliners' were 50-year-old men with grey hair, wearing boxers and t-shirts (Rob's said Duh on it with a picture of a guy that looked sort of like him, but wasn't). Anyway the kids were not sure at all, but the funky tight chops, wit and energy won them over. Restored my faith in good music. I wouldn't really say I'm a huge fan or anything, but I've never seen Now fail to get a dancefloor going and it's one of my all-time favourites. cheers, hobbes
"Oh, Canada!" 0+2=1 is one of my favorites -- it's the last one with Andy Kerr on guitar/vocals, and I feel that the album is their most creative output overall, as far as the total package goes, lyrics, music, composition, playing virtuosity, etc. If you're interested, there's a NMN/Hansons DVD that's officially being released in February, but you can get it now for $20 from: http://www.punkervision.net/nmn.htm Ha, when I first saw them in 1994 in Chapel Hill, NC, I knew they were olders chaps, but the grey hair blew me away. I'd been a fan of theirs for years at that point, but they are notorious for rarely going to the southeast, where I was living at the time, so that was my first live experience. I'm just sad that I never got to see them live with Andy.... Agreed; great song. I would, however, definitely consider myself a huge fan -- I own almost everything they've ever released, except for the impossible-to-find first 7" record and some of the rare Europe-only releases. My first experience with them was the track "No *#*#*#*#*#ing/Hunt the She Beast" on the "Ooops! Wrong Stereotype" Alternative Tentacles compilation in 1987. I immediately ran out and found "Sex Mad" which had just been re-issued on Alt. Tent. -- it remains one of my favorite NMN records. Actually, all of them (except for "No One") are incredible albums in their own right, and depending on when you ask me and what kind of mood I'm in, I might give you a different answer as to which album of theirs I think is my favorite at that particular moment in time. Anyway, good to hear that there are soccer fans out there who enjoy such a great band. Cheers!
While I always like to differenciate between what is good and what I like (I love certain bands who aren't very good, but I don't care). That being said NoMeansNo is quite good and I can see why someone might consider them the greatest band ever. They're prolific, influential, great musicians, innovative and they've endured. Now I don't think they're the greatest band ever, but I think someone could make a case if they wanted to. It would be there opinion, obviously, any time someone says 'this is the greatest band ever' they're also saying 'this is my favourite band ever' at the same time. But there is enough quality in NoMeansNo that you can argue it. cheers, hobbes PS thanks for the link for the DVD.
Re: Re: Any NoMeansNo fans here? Of course. When speaking about music or films, I take it as a given that one is voicing subjective personal preferences, and nothing more.
Certain bands "speak" to different people in different and more profound ways. The humorous/sarcastic and intelligent lyrics along with virtuoso playing and incredible songwriting of NoMeansNo have spoken to me many ways in which other bands have not. I fully realize that NoMeansNo is not for everyone; I'm completely cool with that, and I'm also cool with people who are casual fans of the band. The one thing I love about NoMeansNo fans is that by and large we're not exclusivists.... You're welcome for the link -- at $20, that DVD is a steal.....
