A thread on a new DCUnited theme song got me thinking... I had this idea of recording a whole little album worth of DCUnited songs. Head to a little cheap recording studio, and record some songs... Maybe 3-14(?) And record what else? Original DCUnited songs, or who knows, maybe even covers w/tacky DCU refrences. Maybe record the songs of the supperter groups w/the actual supporter groups themselves. And donate any profits to the DCU charity.... or maybe have them ready to download for free? Just imagine it... Just put the little CD in, and learn as you go. **starts thinking** maybe this has been done before If any muscian or singers, are intersted in the idea... I guess PM me, or post on the thread.... I think as a plan to be all-inclusive to DCU fans w/diverse tastes and origins an effort should be do to have a little of eveything to have - some Stadium Anthems (((this one recording the supporter groups own songs w/the actual supporter groups themselves) - Maybe have some Latin sounds, my fellow Bolivians maybe we can get a queca? I know my uncle might know some Andean style musicans, maybe write an anthem for DCU - An anthem w/the various Salsa and Merengue sounds(?) anybody intersted? know of anybody? - Maybe a DCUnited hip-hop anthem? Any takers? - Definatly a few Rock DCU anthems. If you want to be part of this you don't even have to sing or play an instrument, maybe all you'd need to do is bang a few pots ((OR COWBELLS???))together but preferable if you were a muscian in the DC area, heck you don't even have to be from the DC Area (i'm not right now) but you must be a DCU fan. We'll work out the details later
Good timing for me--I just talked to my band (D.C./ Richmond) about a DCU song as a B-side or toss-off. I figured it would probably be for kicks, but if you can get 10 more bands on board, you can probably make it happen. You'd probably have to let bands book their own studio and time and send you the dat, instead of trying to coordinate everything on one studio, if that's what you were getting at. My band has a song coming out on the newest Teenbeat Records sampler next month--the label that gave us Air Miami's "World Cup Fever," one of the few great rock'n'roll soccer songs. There have to be a few United fans in the Teenbeat/Arlington camp. and... Richmond-based DCU fan and BS-poster Doug Dobey is the world's greatest album/CD cover designer--he's done Bio Ritmo covers and some other punk bands' covers. Just thinking out loud.
How about a song (3-5 mins) leading into a chant (20-40 sec) then another song ... alternating like Jock Rock or The Music of NFL Films? I'll bring the drums, gong, and steel drum. Thing is, can we fit Sections 120, 135, 136, and 137 in that damn studio?
Interesting idea. I've actually thought about doing something like this before. I don't have a band, but I am a musician (in my spare time), and I recorded a homemade EP last year, and I had thought of doing something like this, too. I would throw in a tune or something if I could think of something clever.
--This could be a really cool idea or a really BAD one. (See MPF link below! ) I would think the hardest part of this would be to come up with enough good songs. (In fact I KNOW this is the hardest part... 90% of all "football" songs just plain suck.) Does the song have to be specifically DC United? Or can it be a general soccer song? Only originals? Covers? This hoping to be released by someone? Made into a proper CD? Or to be kept at strictly a indie basement/home grown project level? You can count me in if I/we can just write or steal a good enough song. I also have some pretty cool/funny MP3's already of the Barra Brava singing from last year. They were recorded by Mike Easby are pretty damn cool. They are going to go up at some point on the new Barra website to be debuted later this year.
Anyone remember the Barmy Army "The English Disease" LP/CD from On-U Sounds a few years back? It had a slew of awesome English footie chants, coach and player interviews and live-action broadcasts cut into rock, funk and dub tracks. Can you imagine a blistering Go-Go workout with Gordon Bradley fumbling through Marino/Moreno, or Hudson's "Shut the f*** up and sit the f*** down!" cut in? I'm thinking a whole Afro-Funk track with a Freddy Freddy Ah-Doo! chant would be pretty sweet as well. Wouldn't it be nice to see some venerable DC area bands come out of the woodwork as supporters? This could be fun! By the way, count me in on the artwork side.
I'd love to get the drummers together for a jam -- you guys could decide whether to record it. In addition to the stadium songs, there are some good drinking songs that the Happy Hour chorus could sing ......... Now that KP is back in the DC saddle, Maybe he can get Stephen King and his band to do a charity event? GM
How hard/easy would be be to record the SE/Barra Brava section at RFK? Would the sound quality be good enough?
First of all, it's nice to see some interest. Sure I like the "snippets/player quotes" idea too. As for my original idea. I was just thinking hmm. Soccer sounds so great on the TV when you hear those supporter sections singing songs in unison... check this studio-made song by Peruvian old-school folksy guitar group The Do-Re-Mi out! http://www.cienciano.com/extras/rumbacienciana.mp3 coming from a Bolvian family in La Paz the big rivalry was always The Strongest - Bolivar. Stories of my mom having gone to these "SuperClassicos" that's "derby's" to some of you, was the chanting... I won't go into detail cause this is about DCU. But what better than to have EVERYONE yelling the same songs . EVEN with 12k-17k this is an amazing sound. Just imagine 24k? or even 50k? As many of you know, Redskins always had that one song "Hail to the Redskins" even non-Redskins fans probrably know that song... ALSO another one of my favorite "Spectator-sport" memories was going to see game 5 of the Caps-Sabres Eastern Confrence Finals... the game was nail-bitter (no doubt about it) but when the Caps won in 2OT, it was ECSTASY let me tell ya'. (they would win the series 2 days later) But FORGET my heart sinking when the Sabres tied the game in the dying minutes sending it to overtime, FORGET walking around in circles in MCI ike a crazy man, FORGET the Game winning Goal... WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF THE NIGHT??? You ask. Easy. The ride back on the Metro, though the Caps didn't have any songs, we Fans sang like champions, A SWARM OF PPL IN Caps jersyes singing "Ollie the Goalie" Yeah I know, simple? hell yeah, was it something that opposing team fans created to mess w/our dear Ollie? Yes. But when we all left for Gallery Place Metro Station, I gotta tell you WHAT A MEMORY. It was great, I just ask myself, if only we sang actual songs. As for the CD- Yes McOwen DCU songs + Soccer songs would be great. Released by someone? Well 1st let's concentrate on getting songs together. Those MP3's of Barra Brava sound like a definite inclusion. Again, let's just get some songs together, this is all for the love of DCU fans, not to make $$$.... It's so if some kid watches DCU Vs. Sj next season and goes "Damn' that's some sweet play' 2)Drags his family to the stadium. 3)Hears the Chants and wonders? hmmmm where can I find these DCU songs? 4)Kid gets the CD, 5) learns the songs, 6)His non-soccer friends listen to that learn the songs, they sing them.... and YES - Grasscutter ask as many ppl/bands for contributions. Again, this is as good as you guys wanna make it, if you guys just want to record a few tracks put a few mp3s up on the net. That' be a way to go, but if you guys wanna go all out, again it's all up to u..... And yes Doug Dobey what could be more "D.C" than Go-Go itself.... Does anyone know any go-go muscians? and yeah the looks pretty wicked. If we could get a few Hudson quotes on it - it would be amazingly cool, though that may be hard w/him in FL. Also DCUs "big moments" bits when they won thier Cups and definatly beating Vasco de Gama in the Intercontinental. and GrillMaster sure why not drinking songs, after all isn't that what anthems are all about? TOTC, GDopplerXT, GrillMaster, McOwen: A drumfest would be great, hmmm... we're missing a few instruments... like bass, WE NEED COWBELLS, maybe Piano, and greatscott Yeah, I'll start inquiring on how to record Big Groups, I hope i'm not given a "You're gonna have to to go to a $300/hr studio" I'm thinking if we could use my old high school in Arlington's band room, that place got acoustics for a drumming ensemble.... wonder what my old teacher would say.... principal probrably wouldn't like it....hmmm i'll ask Inner Ear & WGBH for recording rates, does anybody else have any recoring suggestions? not that I was a drummer in H.S. speaking of I should call my old funk/punk-rock band membmers and ask em' bout the idea. Also, if anybody knows any Brazilian musicians, Irish Muscians, I should call my music uncle too. -Izzy Big Spaniel = recording at RFK, would probrably not be too good, Notice how most LIVE albums, ussually have that dense sound, THEN AGAIN that Woodstock II CD sounds great, YET they had the best micraphones $ could buy. then again, I'm up for the idea... of course will they allow recording equiptment into RFK? Something tells me getting DCU green light would help, but part of me tells me it might not.
Contact Spitfire United. They have season tickets in 121 I believe. Also, check out Bouncing Souls version of "Ole" with the line "We drink beer and wear adidas." If you need, La Norte will bring the El Bombo for any recording. Sachin
RFK would not be a bad place to record if we can get into the upper deck. Big echo off the concrete ceiling!
Thinking of calling the gang Meridian? THIS could be the ticket to your return to greatness We suck this year and I nominate "sorry Again" as our theme! p.s. --Just thinking aloud here... I have a rather nice portable digital track recorder and I THINK this might be able to be used via an adapter outside say in LOT 8... At the start of the season we COULD MAYBE get all the drummers together etc. and even the Barra drunks etc to record a few things. The MP3's I have that Mr. Easby recorded are GOOD but at the same time they were on a "thinner" game day then i would have liked. We shouldnt want to start slapping Pro Tools etc onto the fans to sound "bigger"
screaming eagles on vinyl! You guys might like to check out my old band BARCELONA's last album TRANSHUMAN REVOLUTION. The album begins and ends with some audio we recorded of the Screaming Eagle section. It sounds kinda cool, like there are 1000 SEs. http://www.darlashop.com/catalog/search.asp?id=2951 You may enjoy our Kasey Keller tribute tune as well: http://www.barcelonadc.com/sounds/kasey_keller.mp3 cheers, j
Re: screaming eagles on vinyl! That's pretty funny, I was reading your post and thinking, 'Barcelona', is that the band that did that Kasey Keller song? And then I saw the link to it... I can't remember where I heard about it but I remember looking at your band's website a while back. Pretty good stuff.
Will United have an open practice this year? Perhaps we can all get together then and record the supporter groups singing. Of course, this means we have to get everyone together. Sachin
If you know about studios compare the link: http://dcpages.com/Music/Recording_Studios/ If you've gone to the studio before, then you know how it is... also, I guess there's interest from 1 bands, so far, we got 2 ppl intersted in art work, the supporter groups seem in, drummrs, any more guitarists? bass players? I've emailed Spitfire United. http://www.spitfiresunited.com/spitfires.html (note thier beer-league-sooccer punx) we'll wait for a response. I'm hoping if we could have a CD w- 3/4 supporter songs, and 1/4 just regular everything else songs, all in 1 cd, then would lower costs, if a CD is done, at the very least we can just burn CDs one CD burner at a time. (don't get more grass-roots than that- nor cheaper! ) As for Studio Quailty sound the thing of course is the Price, I found Recording Arts (in Fairfax) @ $55/hr FOR Supporter songs: if only 25 people show up (though of course the place should be crammed) For 1hr= $2 each. For 2hrs/recording = $4/each. (again this is if only 25 ppl show up) I'll call them up ....also NPR has a big studio, yet doesn't show thier rates online Recording arts : 1500 square foot facility (30 ft. ceiling) http://www.recordarts.com/studio.html NPR studios in dc near china town(don't know rates yet): Studio - 1,700 square feet (18 ft. ceiling) http://www.npr.org/studios/studios.html Recording in a studio, might have a "sterile" feeling compared to being @ RFK, yet many studios now use "portable" equiptment....... and of course, if you have your own equiptment, and our willing to have used this could be helpfull for budget reasons. I still haven't heard a word from my drummer buddy he must be swamped w/school work, or maybe touring w/his own band.
I still think I can record the Barra/Norte/ SE's drum circle etc in LOT 8 on my digital track recorder (its good $hit not some cheapy trust me ) My brother and I are also in the studio now recording an LP in Fredericksburg VA so we might also be able to kick out a quick song as well there. (a proper band song) I just need to think of one --anyway, lets all just sort of work some stuff out and get back on this in a bit. We can just send the songs to a few people and they can hold them till we get a better idea of what we are capable of. (?)
Any room for turntablists? I've been trying to splice together my own little DCU tribute song through MTV Music Generator 2...maybe now I'll have some incentive to get off my ass and finish it.
