According to their twitter, the appeal was denied. They will be in League One next season: Update | Wigan Athletic AppealThe joint administrators have been informed that our appeal against our 12-point deduction has not been successful.#wafc 🔵⚪️💚— Wigan Athletic (@LaticsOfficial) August 4, 2020
One of the immediate effects of Wigan's relegation is that Antonee Robinson can now leave for short of £2m, thanks to a clause in his contract. As many as four PL clubs are interested and movement is not likely to be far away. West Ham among those sniffing.— Mike Keegan (@MikeKeegan_DM) August 4, 2020
This Telegraph article below also mentions Watford as an interested party now. I hadn't seen their name before. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/footbal...legated-league-one-losing-12-point-deduction/
Hopefully Milan will come back in for him if they can get him for < 2M pounds. THat's a steal for someone of his calibre.
They will but it doesn’t sound like he’s interested anymore. He doesn’t want to be a backup. He also won’t go to Watford after their relegation to the championship.
if the transfer fee is effectively capped is antonee more like a north american free agent who can pick the best fit at the most agreeable pay?
yes but at the same time, teams aren't going to be worried about the sunk cost at that low of an amount. Big money transfers always get more rope to prove themselves
Wages in Europe tend to be guaranteed and that's part of the "sunk cost," so it's not that simple. From an economics standpoint, it's not so much that he can be had on the cheap, his price hasn't really changed. Rather, other than 2m pounds, Robinson can keep the "transfer fee" (likely in the form of increased wages).
Refresh my memory, what's the point of the 12-pt reduction? To punish a club for filing for bankruptcy? Isn't bankruptcy enough punishment? Now, with a point reduction, they have to drop divisions, make less revenue, and sell half their team, but their player's transfer fees are capped?!? Is this like debtor's prison? They'll let you out when you can pay back what you owe, but you're like in prison, so how's that work? If transfer fees are capped, why wouldn't you try to sell off your valuable players in the transfer window prior to bankruptcy, since having your transfer fees capped, can be brutal. And isn't this the case where the new owner, supposedly vetted by the league, didn't put the money in that was promised? So, how's that the team's fault? They're not faultless, but they certainly seem to get all the blame.
I think when dougtree said the transfer fee is effectively capped, he was referring specifically to the relegation clause in Robinson's contract, not to any action taken as a result of Wigan's financial situation. And in Robinson's case it sounds like they did try to sell him in the prior transfer window; it's just that his health issue put a wrench in that.
I think it's a drag to suffer the drop for non-footballing reasons that don't involved cheating on the field or in player action, but at least it will work out in Robinson's favor.
Some players are going to find other jobs, but the ones that stay, the fans, the administrators that remain, those guys all got screwed.
Just an update that came through from Milan insiders on this where Antonee is still the top choice for back up LB but the first priority is selling Ricardo Rodriguez, Davide Calabria, and Diego Laxalt. Apparently Paolo Maldini has been in contact with Antonee telling him that even as a backup with Europa and Cup games they would still expect him to get plenty of starts and also be used in a lot of games off the bench. Admittedly finding a backup LB is not the first purchases Milan are looking at but they are doing a pitch for ARob. I still kind of think though that he will be at either West Ham or West Brom
I think hes better served getting approximately 28-32 starts in premier league or somewhere else in in a top 4 league with guaranteed playing time than in europa and cup matches for AC
As both a Milan fan and a US fan I'd agree just based on his form. Unless Theo leaves or regresses a lot he just wouldn't get as much time (though I think he would be great in Italy). And now is the time for ARob to make a play to lock down the LB spot
A yo-yo club or a club that is perenially going to battle against relegation, versus living in Milan and having the opportunity to win a starting role for one of the great clubs in Europe..., I don't know which I'd choose. I know there are many variables to look at, including how his development would be best suited, but it would be tough to turn down the option of wearing the colors of AC Milan for a few years. And yes I know he'd be signing there as a backup, etc, etc.
I would assume it's a punishment for the club for getting itself into the financial situation in the first place. It's a pretty draconian penalty though, especially in this situation where the club was safely above the relegation line. The other part of that rule though was that, I believe, if they didn't get relegated (meaning if they had enough points to stay above the relegation line), they would have started the season at -12 points. That almost guarantees relegation to them next season. I remember that happened I think to Juve a few years ago as a result of the match fixing scandal.
Juventus (who had won the Scudetto that season) were stripped of their title (and their previous one as well), automatically relegated, and started off the following season in Serie B with a 9 point deduction (although it was originally 30 until they appealed it). They still managed to get promoted immediately though by finishing comfortably first in Serie B.
I mean id love to have him at Milan. Theo got overworked and he at times can be a liability or wreck less in defense so someone like Robinson (for as cheap as he can be had) is great. Robinson's mindset has also changed a bit and he wants a starting job. I know West Ham has been scouting him heavily even with Moyes going to a few Wigan games.
i think Milan is a storied destination, but an EPL club probably pays more. At the end of the day these guys do this for a living and while short term less is more crowd will of course disagree, but the whole bird in hand thing exists for a reason.
