Stoke down 3-0 to Wigan, keeping them within a point of relegation to the third tier, and Ryan Shawcross scored an own goal? My petty Arsenal heart has grown three sizes today.
Wigan have gone into administation, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53247333 which could mean a 12 points deduction. Robinson is almost certainly their most saleable asset, so this make his sale inevitable this summer. I wonder how much the failed transfer in January affected this outcome.
i wonder if a lot of clubs will go into administration post covid and we see a waiving of the automatic point deductions. either way this makes antonee as good as gone as if he wasnt already.
It probably wouldn't have, as they would most likely have used the $$ to strengthen the squad in other areas with new players, players that would still be expecting to be paid now. In any case, that's academic for Antonee. If he wasn't already gone at the end of the season, he is now. In fact, with administration's 12-point deduction pushing Wigan into relegation, he and Wigan (their creditors anyway) would be better off if he suffers a convenient hamstring tweak that takes 6 weeks to clear up so that he doesn't actually get injured between now and the window opening.
His move to Milan fell through at the final hour of the January window. There were no plans to buy further players. His replacement was purchased from Leeds for $275k over the summer. The $8-$10 million from his transfer would've most certainly covered a large portion of current club debts.
What a tough break. Literally they are going bankrupt and maybe down a division because at the last minute they player they were selling had a heart irregularity.
Wigan's administration is a shock, and something certainly appears fishy if not outright illegal with the owner as they go into administration only 4 weeks after an ownership change? A change in which selling corp and buying corp were both majority owned by 1 man, and an interest free loan was turned into an 8% loan with big extra penalties. This wasn't fully covid related -it was a scam by the owner to funnel $$$ to himself, and China's new security law on Hong Kong likely had an effect on the decision making by the owner. It will be interesting to see where Antonee winds up. Wigan had been playing so well, I actually think spending another season there, in the championship might have been OK for him, as in current form, Wigan would have had a decent shot at promotion next year (and still an outside shot at playoffs this year if not for administration - though sounds like they'll be appealing the deduction).
Love to see him in the premier league; but, prefer anyone but West Ham - and West Ham is still in a survival scrape
very shady indeed, this is what my friend told me, There is a video of the chairman of the EFL saying there are rumors that the owners put a bet on in the Philippines that Wigan would be relegated and that’s why they stopped funding the club so that wigan would get a 12 point deduction. since then several journalists and the efl has since confirmed the video is legitimate https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...ng-Wigan-Athletics-stricken-former-owner.html
This kind of event has the potential to call into question the legitimacy of the sport everywhere. Serious stuff, which may require authorities/international law enforcement to get involved.

Looks like Antonee Robinson was Jake Taylor or Ricky Vaughn in Major League, still playing hard for pride, their future, or to spite the owners after they de-funded the club & bet against their success; as he posted a 7.6 on Whoscored today. It was better than anyone else on the team & most of the opposition who defeated Wigan 3-0. Really showed his character.
If anyone is looking for more info (you should be, it's fascinating), there are a couple good twitter threads easily found. Apparently the "sale" was to a Chinese guy who had set up a shell company in the Caymans. Seems there is no information on this person at all, however, which leads most to believe this person doesn't exist and was simply a way for the current owner to transfer liability or something. Crazy thing is the EFL approved the ownership transfer like 4 weeks ago, then immediately are ok docking 12 points because it didn't work out? This is the kind of story that a movie could be made about. And if not appealing internationally, England really needs to look into it, as it's sketchy almost beyond belief.
